Starina Reservoir
Starina reservoir is a water reservoir in eastern Slovakia, Snina District, located in the Poloniny National Park. It is the most important source of drinking water in the area, built on the headwaters of the river Cirocha. Building started in 1981. 3,463 inhabitants were evacuated from 769 dwellings from the 7 following villages ( Starina, Dara, Ostrožnica, Smolník, Ruské, Veľká Poľana and Zvala). The total surface of the water reservoir Starina is 240 ha. The height of the water headbay is 50 m. This source of drinking water is very important because it supplies nearly all of East Slovakia with drinking water. Poloniny National Park
Poloniny National Park ( sk, Národný park Poloniny) is a national park in northeastern Slovakia at the Polish and Ukrainian borders, in the Bukovské vrchy mountain range, which belongs to the Eastern Carpathians. It was created on 1 October 1997 with a protected area of and a buffer zone of . Selected areas of the park are included into Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dara is a former Ruthenian village in eastern Slovakia, in Snina District. The first mention of the village was in 1598. The village originally belonged to the noble families of Humenné, later given to some other noble families. The village was destroyed for the construction of the Starina reservoir in 1986 with six other villages. The only thing remaining is an Orthodox church of 1956, which stands on the site of a wooden chapel from 1746. In 1980 the village was destroyed, along with six other villages, to make way for the Starina reservoir. Before its destruction, it had 72 houses and approximately 360 people.
