St. Nicholas Cathedral (Dushanbe)
St. Nicholas Cathedral (russian: Свято-Николаевский собор) is a Russian Orthodox church in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. It is the Cathedral church of the ''Russian Orthodox Eparchy of Dushanbe and Tajikistan''. History The cathedral was completed at the end of 1943 due to a certain softening that occurred in the USSR in relation to the Patriarchal Church that year. After the collapse of the USSR, a large number of Orthodox families to left the country, leaving the cathedral with no visitors. In the spring of 2005, the St. Nicholas Cathedral began its first major reconstruction, which continued until 2011. Dushanbe
Dushanbe ( tg, Душанбе, ; ; russian: Душанбе) is the capital and largest city of Tajikistan. , Dushanbe had a population of 863,400 and that population was largely Tajik. Until 1929, the city was known in Russian as Dyushambe (russian: Дюшамбе, ''Dyushambe''), and from 1929 to 1961 as Stalinabad ( tg, Сталинобод, Stalinobod), after Joseph Stalin. Russians in Tajikistan are a minority ethnic group numbering 68,200 individuals as of 2000 Census, representing 1.1% of the population. In 1989, ethnic Russians made up 7.6% of the population. Russia–Tajikistan relations (russian: Российско-таджикские отношения) are the bilateral relations between the Russian Federation and Tajikistan. Both countries are close allies and members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the military alliance formed by the Collective Security Treaty Organization, and the Commonwealth of Independent States.
