St. Helens, Oregon
St. Helens is the county seat of Columbia County, Oregon. It was founded by Captain Henry Montgomery Knighton, a native of New England, in 1845, as "Plymouth". The name was changed to St. Helens in the latter part of 1850 for its view of Mount St. Helens, roughly away in Washington. The city is about 28 miles (45 km) northwest of Portland. Its population was 12,883 at the 2010 census. History St. Helens was established as a river port on the Columbia River in the 1840s. The original town was surveyed and platted by Scottish-born Peter Crawford. In 1853, the Pacific Mail Steamship Company tried to make the city their only stop on the Columbia River. Portland's merchants boycotted this effort, and the San Francisco steamship ''Peytona'' helped break the impasse. St. Helens was incorporated as a city in 1889. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936. Scappoose Bay
Scappoose Bay is a slough of Multnomah Channel, a distributary of the Willamette River, about upstream of where the channel meets the Columbia River in Columbia County, Oregon, United States. It is surrounded by a broad wetland area full of small ponds and other waterways across from Sauvie Island. It lies between Scappoose to the south and St. Helens to the north. A few small streams, including Milton Creek and Scappoose Creek drain from the east slopes of the Oregon Coast Range into the bay. Lying in the upper portion of the Columbia River Estuary, Scappoose Bay is tidal but is a freshwater body. The original inhabitants of the Scappoose Bay area were the Chinookan peoples who hunted, fished, and gathered in the area. Milton Creek
Milton Creek, is a waterway in Columbia County, Oregon, United States. It is long, rising in the Oregon Coast Range and emptying into Scappoose Bay – a slough of Multnomah Channel – one of the distributaries of the Willamette River where it enters the Columbia River. The creek was named for a small settlement that was founded at the mouth of the creek in 1846, but later became Houlton because there was already a post office in Oregon with the name Milton ( Milton-Freewater). Houlton was later absorbed into St. Helens. The creek is home to several fish species, including steelhead trout, cutthroat trout, and coho salmon. Much of the undeveloped portion of the watershed is heavily forested. Multnomah Channel
The Multnomah Channel is a distributary of the Willamette River. It diverges from the main stem a few miles upstream of the main stem's confluence with the Columbia River in Multnomah County in the U.S. state of Oregon. The channel flows northwest then north around Sauvie Island to meet the Columbia River near the city of St. Helens, in Columbia County. The Lewis and Clark Expedition, also known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition, was the United States expedition to cross the newly acquired western portion of the country after the Louisiana Purchase.
