St. Albert (N.W.T. Electoral District)
St. Albert was a territorial electoral district that existed twice in the Northwest Territories, Canada. The first district existed from 1885 until 1888. The district was recreated in 1891 and was abolished in 1905. History The electoral district was created by Royal Proclamation in 1885. The electoral district was named after the settlement of St. Albert situated just northwest of Edmonton. The first incarnation of the district was abolished in 1888 after it was merged to become part of the Edmonton electoral district under the ''North-West Representation Act 1888''. Edmonton would be broken up again after dissolution of the 1st North-West Legislative Assembly in 1891 and the district recreated. Northwest Territories
The Northwest Territories (abbreviated ''NT'' or ''NWT''; french: Territoires du Nord-Ouest, formerly ''North-Western Territory'' and ''North-West Territories'' and namely shortened as ''Northwest Territory'') is a federal territory of Canada. At a land area of approximately and a 2016 census population of 41,790, it is the second-largest and the most populous of the three territories in Northern Canada. Its estimated population as of 2022 is 45,605. Yellowknife is the capital, most populous community, and only city in the territory; its population was 19,569 as of the 2016 census. 1st North-West Legislative Assembly
The 1st North-West Legislative Assembly lasted from 1888 to 1891. This Assembly was the third in the history of the Northwest Territories. It marked a huge milestone, bringing responsible government to the territory for the first time. Background The 1st Northwest Territories Council was dissolved after reaching the quota of elected members prescribed under the ''Northwest Territories Act''. This precipitated the 1888 Northwest Territories general election. Despite being an elected body, there were three remaining appointed members left to serve in the Assembly. 1902 Northwest Territories General Election
The 1902 North-West Territories general election, occurred on 21 May 1902 and was the fifth general election in the history of the North-West Territories, Canada. It was held to elect Members of the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories. This was the last election held until 1951, and was the last in the Northwest Territories (NWT) to have political parties. Frederick W. A. G. Haultain and the Liberal-Conservatives continued with government. Donald H. McDonald was thrust into being the Liberal leader just days before the vote, with the surprise decision by Robert Brett to drop out of the race. In 1905, the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan were created out of North-West Territories, and they took most of the voting population with them. 5th North-West Legislative Assembly
The 5th North-West Legislative Assembly lasted from 1902 until dissolution in 1905. This was the largest membership of any Assembly in the Northwest Territories of Canada, and the only one that truly had political parties. It was also the last one to be fully elected and have a speaker until 1975 and the last one to have a premier and executive council until 1980. It was dissolved due to the division of Alberta and Saskatchewan from the territories. 1898 Northwest Territories General Election
The 1898 North-West Territories general election took place on 4 November 1898. This was the fourth general election in the history of the North-West Territories, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories. Frederick W. A. G. Haultain was still the first premier of the North-West Territories (NWT). That title was given by legislation passed in 1897. He was the last premier of the NWT until 1980. There were three big issues in this election, the first being acquiring provincial rights and how to divide the NWT into provinces. The second issue was the transfer of education from the federal to the territorial level. This was Haultain's personal project. Unfortunately for the NWT, that power was not turned over until 1970. Daniel Maloney
Daniel Maloney (March 7, 1848 - February 12, 1910) was a politician from Northwest Territories, Canada. Maloney first ran for election to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in the 1888 Northwest Territories general election in the Edmonton electoral district. He finished a distant fourth place in a field of four candidates behind the winners Herbert Charles Wilson and Frank Oliver and the third place finisher Samuel Cunningham. Maloney ran for a second time in the 1891 Northwest Territories general election in the reconstituted St. Albert electoral district. He again finished last, this time in a field of three candidates. In Maloney's third attempt for office, he won election in the 1894 Northwest Territories general election, defeating incumbent Antonio Prince.
