Spike Slawson
Spike Slawson is an American punk rock musician, a member of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Swingin' Utters, Filthy Thievin' Bastards, Re-Volts, and Uke-Hunt. Early life Having grown up in Pittsburgh, Slawson worked in the mail order department of the record label Fat Wreck Chords (which is the subject of a song by The Aquabats titled "Dear Spike"). Musical career He later was in Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (a cover band/' supergroup' consisting mainly of members of Fat Wreck bands) formed in 1995. Slawson is the lead singer for the group. From 1997 to 2012, he was the bassist for Swingin' Utters. He also plays bass in Filthy Thieving Bastards, sings and plays bass for the Re-Volts, and more recently sings and plays ukulele for Uke-Hunt. Me First And The Gimme Gimmes
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (often shortened to just Me First or the Gimmes) are a punk rock supergroup and cover band that formed in San Francisco in 1995. The band's lineup consists of Spike Slawson, Fat Mike, Joey Cape, and Dave Raun. Chris Shiflett is a former member. The Gimmes work exclusively as a cover band. They specialize in rapid-fire punk interpretations of a wide range of songs, often with a humorous edge. The band is named after a children's book of the same name by Gerald G. Jampolsky and Diane V. Cirincione. History The band's first release came with 1995's ''Denver'', a 7" single released on band member Fat Mike's record label Fat Wreck Chords, featuring two John Denver covers. ''Are a Drag'' is the second album by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, released in 1999 on the Fat Wreck Chords independent record label. The album is made up mainly of show tunes. The album's title alludes to the fact that most of the songs on the album feature vocalist Spike Slawson singing songs that were originally performed by female characters in their original stage shows/movies (with the exception of the Phantom's part in "Phantom of the Opera", "Science Fiction/Double Feature" which was sung by a female traditionally, but more popularly by Richard O'Brien in ''The Rocky Horror Picture Show'', and "Rainbow Connection"). ''Swingin' Utters'' is an album by American punk rock band Swingin' Utters, released in 2000. It was produced by Ryan Greene, and has a folkier sound than the band's previous albums. ''Five Lessons Learned'' is the fourth full-length album by American punk rock band Swingin' Utters. Released in 1998, it was their second album on Fat Wreck Chords. Background This album's title track was used on the video game ''Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2'', perhaps making it the band's most widely heard song. "I Need Feedback", however, was the only Single (music), single released from this album. Also, the song "This Bastard's Life" is featured in music video game ''Rock Band 3''. ''Are We Not Men? We Are Diva!'' is a cover album from punk rock supergroup Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. The album consists of covers of songs originally performed by divas. It was released on May 13, 2014 on Fat Wreck Chords. Prior to the album's release, the band put out two singles. The first was their cover of Paula Abdul's track "Straight Up". On May 5, they released a cover of Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" as a second pre-release single. Speaking about the album, guitarist Joey Cape said in an interview that "we always cover songs that one might consider to be guilty pleasures. 'Beautiful' clearly fits the bill. It is a great song but not necessarily something a fan of any of our bands would even consider." The title is a reference to Devo's album '' Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!''. ''Love Their Country'' is the fifth studio album, and sixth overall by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. It was released on October 17, 2006, by Fat Wreck Chords. The album consists of cover versions of country and western songs. Prior to its release, a Fat Wreck Chords press release had stated that the album would range from "the Dixie Chicks to Garth rooks Hank illiamsSr. to ohnnyCash." A cover of the "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" was featured on iFloyd, a sampler released by Fat Wreck Chords. Like their previous four albums, The Gimmes interpolate punk rock classics in their covers.
