Spain At The UCI Road World Championships
Spain at the UCI Road World Championships is an overview of the Spanish results at the UCI Road World Championships. The Spanish competitors are selected by coaches of the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation. Apart from cycling events at the four-yearly Summer Olympics, the only times that road cyclists appear in proper national selections (instead of in commercial cycling teams) of one or multiple athletes are the yearly UCI Road World Championships. Because of this, all Spanish national road cycling teams (either elite, amateur or younger teams) only compete as such during one day per year. The nation's first medal, a silver, was earned by Luciano Montero in the men's road race in 1935. Luis Ocaña
Jesús Luis Ocaña Pernía (; 9 June 1945 – 19 May 1994) was a Spanish road bicycle racer who won the 1973 Tour de France and the 1970 Vuelta a España. During the 1971 Tour de France he launched an amazing solo breakaway that put him into the Yellow Jersey and stunned the rest of the main field, including back to back Tour champion Eddy Merckx, but abandoned in the fourteenth stage after a crash on the descent of the Col de Menté. Ocaña would abandon as many Tours as he entered, but he finished every Vuelta a España he entered except for his first, and finished in the top 5 seven times in a row. Career Early years Ocaña was born in Priego, Cuenca, Spain but his family moved to Mont-de-Marsan ( Landes, France) in 1957. José Viejo
José Luis Viejo Gómez (2 November 1949 – 16 November 2014) was a Spanish road cyclist who was professional from 1973 to 1982. He represented his native country at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, where he finished in 37th place in the men's individual road race. Viejo won the 11th stage of the 1976 Tour de France with a time difference of 22 minutes and 50 seconds to the second-placed cyclist; this is the largest lead in the Tour de France after the Second World War.
