The Southern Front was a Sudanese political party, from the ranks of which came the first President of South Sudan, President of the High Executive Council of the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region, High Executive Council of the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region (1972–1983), Southern Sudan Autonomous Region, Abel Alier, the first head of the autonomous government of that then Sudanese region, in 1972. Southern Sudan Autonomous Region (1972–1983)
The Southern Sudan Autonomous Region was an autonomous region that existed in Southern Sudan between 1972 and 1983. It was established on 28 February 1972 by the Addis Ababa Agreement which ended the First Sudanese Civil War. The region was abolished on 5 June 1983 by the administration of Sudanese President Gaafar Nimeiry. Revocation of southern autonomy was one of the causes of the Second Sudanese Civil War which would continue until January 2005, when southern autonomy was restored; the region became the independent Republic of South Sudan in 2011. Abel Alier
Abel Alier Kwai (born June 23, 1933) is a South Sudanese politician and judge who served as Vice President of Sudan between 1971 and 1982 and as President of the High Executive Council of the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region between 1972 and 1978. After Sudan gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1956, Southern Sudan was not left as an independent state. This led to a deadly war a year before the independence. A party in the war was Anyanya 1 Under Joseph Lagu. Abel Alier was a politician who managed to complete his college education among many Southern Sudanese. He is an internationally respected judge, human-rights lawyer and activist on behalf of Christians in the Sudan.
