Southeastern District (VHSL)
The Southeastern District is a district of the Virginia High School League. The schools in the Southeastern District compete in the 6A, 5A, and 4A divisions. The members of the Southeastern District are all the public high schools in Chesapeake City and Suffolk City. This is one of the faster-growing regions in the Commonwealth. Virginia High School League
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) is the principal sanctioning organization for interscholastic athletic competition among public high schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The VHSL first sponsored debate and also continues to sponsor state championships in several academic activities. Private and religious schools and teams of homeschooled students belong to other sanctioning organizations, the largest of which is the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association. Proposals in the Virginia General Assembly to mandate that the VHSL allow homeschooled students to compete for the public high school they would otherwise attend have failed to pass. Chesapeake is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. Suffolk, Virginia
Suffolk is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and as such has no county. As of the 2020 census, the population was 94,324. It is the 9th most populous city in Virginia and the largest city in Virginia by boundary land area as well as the 14th largest in the country. Suffolk is located in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. This also includes the independent cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, and smaller cities, counties, and towns of Hampton Roads. Deep Creek High School
Deep Creek High School is a public secondary school in Chesapeake, Virginia. It is part of Chesapeake City Public Schools and is located on 2900 Margaret Booker Drive. History In 1845, Norfolk County, Virginia constructed the first public school in Deep Creek, Virginia. It was the second school to be constructed in Norfolk County from funds provided by the General Assembly for public education. The one-room school was across from the present day Deep Creek Intermediate School. The school was closed and destroyed by federal troops during the Civil War. In 1870, a school was erected on Old Gilmerton Road. Several years later, a one-room school facing Galberry Road behind and adjacent to Flemming's Store was constructed. Grassfield High School
Grassfield High School is a public high school located in Chesapeake, Virginia, USA, and is administered by Chesapeake City Public Schools. It was built to ease overcrowding at Deep Creek High School, Great Bridge High School, and Hickory High School. Grassfield, along with Western Branch High School and Oscar Smith High School, features the latest technology available in the school district. Grassfield is also the City of Chesapeake's location for the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) school as various high school students around the city can apply for admission into the program. Great Bridge High School
Great Bridge High School is a public secondary school in Chesapeake, Virginia, United States. It is part of Chesapeake City Public Schools. History Great Bridge opened in 1907, holding students from 1st through 12th grade. Another larger building opened in 1924, which also housed students from 1st through 11th grade. In 1954, Great Bridge moved to another new larger building which accommodated students in 6th through 12th grade. This building has now become the site of Great Bridge Middle School. In 1983, the current site of Great Bridge opened, which accommodates students in the 9th through 12th grade. Athletics The mascot is a wildcat and the sports teams currently play in the AAA Southeastern District of the AAA Eastern Region. Hickory High School ( Hickory, Virginia) is a high school in Chesapeake, Virginia. There are approximately 2,100 students. The mascot is a hawk and the school colors are teal, grey, white, and black. Owing to the overwhelming number of students, a new school, Grassfield High School, was built nearby. Indian River High School (Virginia)
Indian River High School is a high school in Chesapeake, Virginia. As of the 2018-19 school year, it had approximately 1700 students. History The school originally opened in the fall of 1963 for 7th graders. From that day forward they were always the 'seniors' at Indian River Junior High. In their Junior 67-'68year the school board was petitioned and the school was upgraded to Indian River Senior High. There were approximately 185 students that graduated in 1969. Their dedication and pride got the school accredited. They set the traditions in motion. A mother of one of the students wrote the Alma Mater, they picked the school colors, the mascot. The original IRHS, which opened in 1967, was on Old Greenbrier Road, while construction on the current building took place. King's Fork High School
King's Fork High School is located in Suffolk, Virginia. It is administered by Suffolk City Public Schools. The school colors are maroon and Vegas gold, and the official mascot is the Bulldog. King's Fork was founded in 2003, and was designed by the architectural firm of Ripley Rodriguez Maddox Motley. It was commissioned by Suffolk City Public Schools due to a widespread economic expansion in sprawl in the western Hampton Roads area. Due to rezoning, students at King's Fork High are drawn from the Northwestern quadrants of the city, including the King's Fork area, Crittenden, and Hobson. Students are also drawn from the southern Nansemond Parkway/Wilroy Road area, and shares Downtown neighborhoods with Lakeland High School. Lakeland High School is a public secondary school in Suffolk, Virginia, United States. It opened in September 1990 and originally consisted of students from the four former high schools of John F. Kennedy High School, Forest Glen High School, John Yeates High School, and Suffolk High School. Lakeland opened its doors to approximately 1800 students. The student population swelled to nearly 2600 students in 2003, and in 2004 a new high school, King's Fork, opened. As a result of the population dropping in the 2004–2005 school year to about 1400 students. However, the following year, the school opened its doors to about 1800 students once again. Nansemond River High School is a public secondary school in Suffolk, Virginia, United States. It opened in September 1990 and originally consisted of students from two of the three former high schools of Suffolk, now middle schools, John F. Kennedy Middle School and John Yeates Middle School. Nansemond River opened its doors to approximately 1700 students. The student population swelled to nearly 2000 students in 2003, and in 2004, a new high school, King's Fork, was formed.
