South Metropolitan Province
The South Metropolitan Province was a two-member electoral province of the Western Australian Legislative Council, located in metropolitan Perth. It was one of several metropolitan seats created following the enactment of the ''Constitution Acts Amendment Act (No.2) 1963'', and became effective on 22 May 1965. The province was very safe for the Labor Party, which held most or all of the component Assembly seats. In 1989, the province was abolished by the ''Acts Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 1987'', and with two others became part of the South Metropolitan Region under the new proportional voting system. Electoral District Of Melville
Melville was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1950 to 1996. The district was based in the southern suburbs of Perth. History First contested at the 1950 state election, the seat's inaugural member was John Tonkin of the Labor Party, hitherto the member for North-East Fremantle since 1933. Tonkin served a long career in parliament, going to become Premier of Western Australia from 1971 to 1974. Garry Kelly
Garry Kenneth Kelly (26 May 1948 – 11 July 2002) was an Australian politician who served as a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1982 to 1993. He stood for parliament eight times in total, winning four elections. Kelly was born in Perth to Rita Phyllis (née Limmer) and Kenneth John Kelly. He attended Manjimup Senior High School, Northam Senior High School, and Melville Senior High School before going on to the Western Australian Institute of Technology (graduating with a physics degree) and the University of Western Australia (graduating with a teaching certificate). Before entering parliament, he worked as a schoolteacher, teaching at Armadale Senior High School and Applecross Senior High School. Howard Olney
Howard William Olney (born 7 October 1934) is the Australian Aboriginal Lands Commissioner. Olney was born in Nedlands and attended Perth Modern School and the University of Western Australia. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1957 and as a magistrate in 1965, being called to the bar in 1974. He became Queen's Counsel in 1980 and served as a Labor member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1980 to 1982. From 1982 to 1988 he was a Justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia, moving to the Federal Court from 1988 to 2003. There in 1998 he wrote the opinion that denied the Yorta Yorta native title claim in Members of the Yorta Yorta Aboriginal Community v Victoria. Des Dans
Desmond Keith Dans (24 November 1924 – 2 January 2014) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1971 to 1989, representing South Metropolitan Province. He served as a minister in the government of Brian Burke. Dans was born in Perth to Mary (née Frances) and Keith Dans. He moved to Kalgoorlie as a child, where he attended a convent school before going on to the Kalgoorlie School of Mines. Dans enlisted in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve in 1942, and served as a stoker aboard HMAS ''Hobart''. After the war's end, he joined the merchant marine, and became involved with the Seamen's Union. He served as state secretary of the union from 1959 to 1971. Frederick Lavery
Frederick Richard Hugh Lavery (13 February 1898 – 12 January 1971) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1952 to 1971. Lavery was born in Coolgardie, Western Australia, to Mary (née de Landgrafft) and William Lavery. He began his schooling in Southern Cross, but later moved away from the country and attended Fremantle Boys' School. After leaving school, Lavery worked for periods as a contractor (at Ballidu), bus driver, and truck driver (for Commonwealth Oil Refineries). He joined the Road Transport Union in 1920, and served as treasurer for 14 years and on the executive for 24 years, and eventually becoming a life member. Lavery entered parliament at the 1952 Legislative Council election, replacing the retiring Edmund Gray in West Province. Ron Thompson (Australian Politician)
Ronald Thompson (15 November 1917 – 16 May 2006) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who was a member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1959 to 1980. He served as a minister in the government of John Tonkin. Thompson was born in Fremantle to Margaret Alice (née Mewburn) and Samuel Thompson. He left school at the age of 14, and subsequently worked as a wool classer at the Fremantle Woolstores. He was later employed as a shopkeeper and waterside worker, and held various positions in the local branch of the Waterside Workers' Federation (WWF). Thompson entered parliament at a 1959 Legislative Council by-election for West Province, caused by the death of Gilbert Fraser. He transferred to the new South Metropolitan Province at the 1965 state election. Fremantle is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is located in the inner south-west of Perth, centring on the port of Fremantle. Fremantle is a historically safe Labor seat, though the Greens WA have polled well in recent times. Labor held the seat from 1924 until a 2009 by-election which was lost to Greens candidate Adele Carles. The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council.. The 2005 changes continued to maintain the previous malapportionment in favour of rural regions. Legislation was passed in 2021 to abolish these regions and increase the size of the council to 37 seats, all of which will be elected by the state-at-large.
