Soul Asylum Discography
The discography of American alternative rock band Soul Asylum consists of 12 studio albums, two live albums, five compilation albums, two extended plays (EPs), 22 singles, and 17 music videos. Formed in 1981 in Minneapolis, Minnesota using the name Loud Fast Rules, the band's original lineup consisted of vocalist Dave Pirner, guitarist Dan Murphy, bassist Karl Mueller, and drummer Pat Morley. The band changed their name to Soul Asylum prior to the release of '' Say What You Will... Everything Can Happen'' in 1984. Later that year, Morley was replaced on drums by Grant Young. The band released two studio albums for Twin/Tone Records in 1986, '' Made to Be Broken'' and '' While You Were Out'', as well as the cassette-only '' Time's Incinerator'', a collection of B-sides, outtakes, and demos. Soul Asylum
Soul Asylum is an American alternative rock band formed in 1981 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their 1993 hit "Runaway Train (Soul Asylum song), Runaway Train" won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. The band was originally called Loud Fast Rules, with a lineup consisting of Dave Pirner, Dan Murphy (musician), Dan Murphy, Karl Mueller (rock musician), Karl Mueller, and Pat Morley. They changed their name to Soul Asylum in 1983. Morley was replaced by Grant Young (musician), Grant Young in 1984. The band recorded three albums with Twin/Tone Records and two with A&M Records, with little commercial success. In 1992, they released the triple-platinum album ''Grave Dancers Union'', featuring "Runaway Train". The band played at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton early the next year. Grant Young (musician)
Grant Young (born January 5, 1964) was the drummer for the alternative rock band Soul Asylum from 1984–1995. He replaced Pat Morley shortly after the release of Soul Asylum's debut album, '' Say What You Will, Clarence...Karl Sold the Truck'' in 1984. Young's last appearance on a Soul Asylum record album was the breakthrough album, ''Grave Dancers Union''. He was replaced in the middle of the recording sessions by Sterling Campbell, who has also since left the band and is primarily associated with David Bowie, as part of his touring bands. Young has said that he played on five or six of the songs on the album. He did not, however, record on the band's biggest hit, "Runaway Train" (recorded by Campbell) but did initially play it with Soul Asylum in concerts. Young was born in Iowa City, Iowa. Ed Stasium
Ed Stasium is an American record producer and audio engineer, who has worked on albums by the Ramones, Talking Heads, Motörhead, the Smithereens and Living Colour. History Stasium began his recording career in 1970 fronting the band Brandywine. He appeared on their sole LP, ''Aged''. When he returned to the music industry three years later, it was as a recording engineer, working on a wide variety of projects ranging from the Chambers Brothers' ''Unbonded'' to Barry Miles' ''Magic Theater'' to Sha Na Na's ''Sha Na Now''. He was the engineer on " Midnight Train to Georgia" by Gladys Knight and the Pips as well as "Dynomite (song)" by Tony Camillo and Bazuka. Lenny Kaye
Lenny Kaye (''né'' Kusikoff; born December 27, 1946) is an American guitarist, composer, and writer who is best known as a member of the Patti Smith Group. Early life Kaye was born to Jewish parents in the Washington Heights area of upper Manhattan, New York, along the Hudson River. His father changed the family name from Kusikoff to Kaye when Lenny was 1 year old. Growing up in Queens and Brooklyn, Kaye originally began playing the accordion, but by the end of the 1950s, had dropped the instrument in favor of collecting records. His family moved to North Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1960 where Lenny attended high school, and later, college, graduating from Rutgers University in 1967, majoring in American history. ''Hang Time'' is a 1988 album from the band Soul Asylum. Released on A&M Records, it was the band's major-label debut. Singer/guitarist Dave Pirner wrote the majority of the album. Clam Dip & Other Delights
Clam Dip & Other Delights is the 1989 EP from Minneapolis rockers Soul Asylum. The title and cover art are both parodies of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass's album '' Whipped Cream & Other Delights''. It was a humorous nod to their new record label, A&M (the "A" standing for "Alpert"). Bassist Karl Mueller sat in for the original album's model, Dolores Erickson. Dave Ayers, the band's first manager, said that Mueller had to sit for hours in a foul-smelling combination of sour cream, paint, whipped cream and seafood. Also, the album makes fun of the A&M logo being under the title of the album, incorporating the Twin/Tone Records logo instead. The EP originally was released in Britain featuring three covers: Foreigner's "Juke Box Hero," Janis Joplin's "Move Over" and "Chains," by an obscure Minneapolis group called the Wad. AllMusic (previously known as All Music Guide and AMG) is an American online music database. It catalogs more than three million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musicians and bands. A demo (shortened from "demonstration") is a song or group of songs typically recorded for limited circulation or for reference use, rather than for general public release. A demo is a way for a musician to approximate their ideas in a fixed format, such as cassette tape, compact disc, or digital audio files, and to thereby pass along those ideas to record labels, producers, or other artists. Musicians often use demos as quick sketches to share with bandmates or arrangers, or simply for personal reference during the songwriting process; in other cases, a songwriter might make a demo to send to artists in hopes of having the song professionally recorded, or a publisher may need a simple recording for publishing or copyright purposes. Outtake
An outtake is a portion of a work (usually a film or music recording) that is removed in the editing process and not included in the work's final, publicly released version. In the digital era, significant outtakes have been appended to CD and DVD reissues of many albums and films as bonus tracks or features, in film often, but not always, for the sake of humor. In terms of photos, an outtake may also mean the ones which are not released in the original set of photos (i.e. photo shoots and digitals). A-side And B-side
The A-side and B-side are the two sides of phonograph records and cassettes; these terms have often been printed on the labels of two-sided music recordings. The A-side usually features a recording that its artist, producer, or record company intends to be the initial focus of promotional efforts and radio airplay and hopefully become a hit record. The B-side (or "flip-side") is a secondary recording that typically receives less attention, although some B-sides have been as successful as, or more so than, their A-sides. Time's Incinerator
''Time's Incinerator'' is a compilation released by Soul Asylum in 1986. It is a rare cassette-only release which contains b-sides, outtakes and demos from the Soul Asylum and the former ''Loud Fast Rules'' days. The album name comes from Soul Asylum's song "Can't Go Back" from the album ''Made To Be Broken'', where the lyrics are ''"fifteen years later caught in time's incinerator... yesterday's worries are today's".'' The five songs (denoted with a star) were outtakes from their 1984 debut album, ''Say What You Will... Everything Can Happen''. These songs eventually made it to the 1988 CD release (and rerelease) of the album, which was titled, '' Say What You Will, Clarence...Karl Sold the Truck''.
