Sonnenallee (Berlin)
The Sonnenallee (“Sun Avenue”) is a street in Berlin, Germany, connecting the districts of Neukölln and Treptow-Köpenick. The street is 5 km long, crossing Baumschulenstraße at its south-east end and terminating at Hermannplatz in the north-west. Sonnenallee was constructed at the end of the 19th century. The area around the Sonnenallee was created to cater for the rural drift to the city of that period. Description Sonnenallee is nearly 5 kilometres long, with around 4.5 kilometres in the district of Neukölln, and 400 meters in Treptow-Köpenick. ''Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee'' (On the Shorter End of Sun Avenue) is the third novel by author Thomas Brussig. The novel is set in East Berlin in the real-life street of Sonnenallee sometime in the late 1970s or early 1980s. The film ''Sonnenallee'', also written by Brussig, is based upon the same characters, but depicts a significantly different storyline. Unusual is the fact that the screenplay for ''Sonnenallee'' served as the basis for the novel, rather than the other way around. Themes of the Novel The story is centered on the main character fifteen-year-old Michael "Micha" Kuppisch who lives with his parents and siblings, Sabine and Bernd, in a typical East Berlin flat. Teresa Weißbach
Teresa Weißbach (born 26 April 1981 in Zwickau, Bezirk Karl-Marx-Stadt, East Germany) is a German actress best known for her role as Miriam in the 1999 film ''Sonnenallee''. Biography She grew up in Stollberg, and at 10 years old joined the Youth Theater. At 17 she made her debut as Miriam Sommer in the film ''Sonnenallee''. Her parents own a bakery in Stollberg, and made special pastry in celebration of the success of Sonnenallee in cinemas. From 1999 to 2003 she studied at the University for Music and Theater in Rostock and was awarded a degree in acting. During her studies, she performed at the Volkstheater in Rostock, and at the Mecklenburg State Theatre in Schwerin, playing, among other roles, Ismene in the tragedy Antigone by Sophocles. In 2002 she performed in the ARD television series ''Berlin, Berlin''. Thomas Brussig
Thomas Brussig (born 1964) is a German writer best known for his satirical novels that deal with the German Democratic Republic. Life Brussig was born in East Berlin. After attending the "Heinrich-Hertz" School, he went on to train as a builder. In 1984 he finished school and training, and served in the East German National People's Army (German: ''Nationale Volksarmee'' or NVA). Brussig found it difficult to wield a weapon and had a hard time. He worked as a museum guard, cleaner and hotel porter among a variety of other odd jobs until the early 90s. In 1990 he studied sociology at the Free University of Berlin. He changed universities 3 years later to study the art of film-making. He graduated in the year 2000. Leander Haußmann
Leander Haußmann (sometimes Haussmann) (; born 26 June 1959, Quedlinburg) is a German theatre and film director. The son of actor Ezard Haußmann and costume designer Doris Haußmann, he attended the Ernst Busch theatre school in Berlin. Haußmann was the theatre director of the city theatre in Bochum (Schauspielhaus Bochum). He also wrote and acted in several plays (1995–2000), and had a role in the Detlev Buck film '' Jailbirds'' (1996). His feature film breakthrough came with ''Sonnenallee'' in 1999. Alexander Scheer
Alexander Scheer (born 1 June 1976 in East Berlin) is a German actor and musician. He has won several national awards for his performances in film and theater, including one German Film Award for "Best Actor in a Leading Role" and one Bavarian Film Award for "Best Actor", both in the year 2019. Biography Scheer studied at in Berlin with main focus on music. In addition to the singing, he played piano and drums in different bands. He left school after the 11th grade and then took up various occupations. He also occurred as a performer in commercials during this period and turned their own amateur films with his friends. Winfried Glatzeder (born 26 April 1945) is a German television actor and playwright. He began his acting career in East Germany in the 1960s. In the early 1970s, he made his breakthrough by starring in films such as '' Zeit der Störche'' and '' The Legend of Paul and Paula''. The Berlin Wall (german: Berliner Mauer, ) was a guarded concrete barrier that encircled West Berlin from 1961 to 1989, separating it from East Berlin and East Germany (GDR). Construction of the Berlin Wall was commenced by the government of the GDR on 13 August 1961. It included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, accompanied by a wide area (later known as the "death strip") that contained anti-vehicle trenches, beds of nails and other defenses. Detlev Buck (; born 1 December 1962 in Bad Segeberg) is a German film director, actor, producer and screenwriter.
