Solidaridad Book Shop
Solidaridad is a bookstore in the Ermita district of Manila, the Philippines. Having first opened its doors in 1964, it is owned by Philippine national artist F. Sionil José and managed by him and his family. It is sometimes called "The best little bookstore in Asia". The shop features the owner's own works and works by other Filipino authors such as Jose Rizal, Nick Joaquin, F. Sionil Jose, Paz Marquez, N.V.M. Gonzalez, Gilda Cordero-Fernando, Bienvenido Santos, Lualhati Bautista. Selected foreign titles are also offered at the bookstore. Ermita
Ermita is a district in Manila, Philippines. Located at the central part of the city, the district is a significant center of finance, education, culture, and commerce. The Solidaridad Network is an international civil society organisation founded in 1969. Its main objective is facilitating the development of socially responsible, ecologically sound and profitable supply chains. It operates through eight regional expertise centers in over 50 countries. History The organization was founded in 1969. In 1988, Solidaridad founded the Max Havelaar coffee label, considered the starting point for the Fairtrade movement. Nick Joaquin
Nicomedes "Nick" Marquez Joaquin (; May 4, 1917 – April 29, 2004) was a Filipino writer and journalist best known for his short stories and novels in the English language. He also wrote using the pen name Quijano de Manila. Joaquin was conferred the rank and title of National Artist of the Philippines for Literature. He has been considered one of the most important Filipino writers, along with José Rizal and Claro M. Recto. Unlike Rizal and Recto, whose works were written in Spanish, Joaquin's major works were written in English despite being a native Spanish speaker. Before becoming one of the leading practitioners of Philippine literature in English, he was a seminarian in Hong Kong – who later realized that he could better serve God and humanity by being a writer. Gilda Cordero-Fernando (June 4, 1930 – August 27, 2020) was a Filipino writer, visual artist, fashion designer and publisher. Early life and education She was born in Manila, has a ''B.A.'' from St. Theresa's College-Manila, and an ''M.A.'' from the Ateneo de Manila University. Early career Cordero-Fernando's early literary career, from 1952 to 1970, focused mostly on short fiction. Some of these were published in two collections of short stories: ''The Butcher, The Baker and The Candlestick Maker'' (1962) and ''A Wilderness of Sweets'' (1973). These books were later compiled and reissued as the ''Story Collection'' (1994). Bienvenido N. Santos (March 22, 1911 – January 7, 1996) was a Filipino-American fiction, poetry and nonfiction writer. He was born and raised in Tondo, Manila. His family roots are originally from Lubao, Pampanga, Philippines. He lived in the United States for many years where he is widely credited as a pioneering Asian-American writer. Lualhati Torres Bautista (born December 2, 1945) is a Filipina writer, novelist, liberal activist and political critic. Her most popular novels include '' Dekada '70''; '' Bata, Bata, Pa'no Ka Ginawa?''; and '' ‘GAPÔ''. Biography Bautista was born in Tondo, Manila, Philippines on December 2, 1945 to Esteban Bautista and Gloria Torres.
