Solaris (novel)
''Solaris'' is a 1961 science fiction novel by Polish writer Stanisław Lem. It follows a crew of scientists on a research station as they attempt to understand an extraterrestrial intelligence, which takes the form of a vast ocean on the titular alien planet. The novel is one of Lem's best-known works. The book has been adapted numerous times for film, radio, and theater. Prominent film adaptations include Andrei Tarkovsky's 1972 version and Steven Soderbergh's 2002 version, although Lem later remarked that none of these films reflected the book's thematic emphasis on the limitations of human rationality. Stanisław Lem
Stanisław Herman Lem (; 12 September 1921 – 27 March 2006) was a Polish writer of science fiction and essays on various subjects, including philosophy, futurology, and literary criticism. Many of his science fiction stories are of satirical and humorous character. Lem's books have been translated into more than 50 languages and have sold more than 45 million copies. Worldwide, he is best known as the author of the 1961 novel ''Solaris (novel), Solaris''. In 1976 Theodore Sturgeon wrote that Lem was the most widely read science fiction writer in the world. Piotr Fronczewski (born 8 June 1946 in Łódź, Poland), is a Polish actor and a cabaret and theatre singer. He is regarded as one of the greatest and most popular actors of his generation. Life and career He was born to a Polish mother, Bogna Duszyńska (1912–2016) and a Polish-Jewish father, Władysław Fronczewski (1900–1969). His father was born as Władysław Finkelstein and changed his last name before the outbreak of World War II. He is a graduate of the Karol Świerczewski Liceum in Warsaw. Stanisław Zaczyk
Stanisław Zaczyk (26 September 1923 – 6 April 1985) was a Polish theatre and film actor. He was awarded the Polonia Restituta in 1969. Biography Zaczyk was born in Nowy Sącz, Poland. In 1945, he graduated from the Theatre Studio near The Old Theatre, Kraków. In the same year, he made his acting debut in Pierre Corneille's ''Le Cid'' portraying a page in the stages of The Old Theatre. From 1946 through 1950, he performed on stages in Jelenia Góra and Wrocław. He then returned to Kraków and became an actor at the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre. Since 1960, Zaczyk acted on Warsaw theatre stages such as Narodowy Theatre (1960–1963, 1965–1968), The Polish Theatre (1963–1965), Ataneum Theatre (1969–1974), and the Powszechny Theatre (1974–1975). Bill Johnston (born 1960) is a prolific Polish language literary translator and professor of comparative literature at Indiana University. His work has helped to expose English-speaking readers to classic and contemporary Polish poetry and fiction.
