Society For Consciousness Studies
The Society for Consciousness Studies (SCS) is a professional scholarly organization founded in San Francisco. The Society aims to promote a multidisciplinary approach to human and animal consciousness studies. Allan Combs is the founder and president, and founding members of SCS include Combs, Imants Barušs, Julie Mossbridge, Jeffrey A. Martin, Ben Goertzel, Stephen A. Consciousness Studies
Consciousness, at its simplest, is sentience and awareness of internal and external existence. However, the lack of definitions has led to millennia of analyses, explanations and debates by philosophers, theologians, linguisticians, and scientists. Opinions differ about what exactly needs to be studied or even considered consciousness. In some explanations, it is synonymous with the mind, and at other times, an aspect of mind. In the past, it was one's "inner life", the world of introspection, of private thought, imagination and volition. Today, it often includes any kind of cognition, experience, feeling or perception. It may be awareness, awareness of awareness, or self-awareness either continuously changing or not. The disparate range of research, notions and speculations raises a curiosity about whether the right questions are being asked. Allan Combs
Allan Combs (born 1942) is an American consciousness theorist who studies the complexity of the mind. Biologist, theoretical neuroscientist and philosopher Walter Jackson Freeman III, wrote of Combs: is work"transcends the fading antimony of The Two Cultures and demonstrates the unity of human knowledge in his synthesis of modern brain dynamics with a broad sweep of history and mythology. Imants Barušs
Imants Barušs is Professor of Psychology at King's University College (University of Western Ontario), King's University College at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. Background He started out in engineering science on a scholarship at the University of Toronto, but then became preoccupied with existential questions, leading him into unconventional areas of study, with the result that he graduated in 1974 with an interdisciplinary BSc. After some years working as a roofer, he enrolled at the University of Calgary and, in 1983, completed an MSc in mathematics with specialization in mathematical foundations, writing his thesis about forcing in topoi. He switched to psychology graduating in 1989 from the University of Regina with a PhD in psychology and specialization in the study of consciousness. Ben Goertzel
Ben Goertzel is a cognitive scientist, artificial intelligence researcher, CEO and founder of SingularityNET, leader of the OpenCog Foundation, and the AGI Society, and chair of Humanity+. Stanley Krippner
Stanley Krippner (born October 4, 1932) is an American psychologist and parapsychologist. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1954 and M.A. (1957) and Ph.D. (1961) degrees from Northwestern University. From 1972 to 2019, he was an executive faculty member and the Alan Watts Professor of Psychology at Saybrook University in Oakland, California. Formerly, Krippner was director of the Kent State University Child Study Center (1961-1964) and director of the Maimonides Medical Center Dream Research Laboratory (of Brooklyn, New York; 1964-1972). Carolyn Cooke
Carolyn Cooke is an American short story writer and novelist. Early life Carolyn Cooke was born on Mount Desert Island in Maine. Cooke graduated with a BA from Smith College, following which she worked as a magazine editor in New York City for publications including ''Penthouse'', ''OMNI'', and ''Avenue''. She then earned a Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University. Career Cooke is currently a professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Arts MFA Program at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, where she co-directs the Center for Transformative Media. Jayne Gackenbach
Jayne Gackenbach (born May 24, 1946) is a dream researcher whose focus is lucid dreaming and other Altered state of consciousness, altered states of consciousness. She holds a Ph.D in Experimental Psychology. She attended Virginia Commonwealth University, graduating in 1978, and went on to research at the University of Northern Iowa for 11 years and then moved to Canada. Her most recent research focuses on video game players and the development of consciousness. She currently teaches full-time as an associate professor at MacEwan University and also teaches part-time at Athabasca University in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Eugene Taylor (psychologist)
Eugene Taylor (28 October 1946 – 30 January 2013) was a scholar on William James and a professor of psychology at Saybrook University and Harvard University. Biography Taylor was educated at Southern Methodist University and Harvard Divinity School, and Boston University (PhD in the History and Philosophy of Psychology). He was the 1983 William James Lecturer at Harvard Divinity School. Taylor died in 2013 and was the subject of many remembrances and obituaries. Etzel Cardeña (born 9 November 1957) is the Thorsen Professor of Psychology at Lund University, Sweden where he is Director of the Centre for Research on Consciousness and Anomalous Psychology (CERCAP). He has served as President of the Society of Psychological Hypnosis, and the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. He is the current editor of the ''Journal of Parapsychology''.
