Sjur Helgeland
Sjur Larsson Helgeland (19 August 1858 − 12 April 1924) was a Norwegian hardingfele fiddler and composer. Biography He was born at Voss in Hordaland, Norway. His parents were Lars Olsson Hirt (1823-1908) and Brita Helgeland (1820-98). He grew up in the rural valley of Myrkdalen in the parish of Vossestrand. He received musical training from local Hardanger fiddle players including Ola Mosafinn (1828–1912). Sjur Aasmundsen Sexe
Sjur Aasmundsen Sexe (14 August 1808 – 17 February 1888) was a Norwegian mineralogist and educator. Biography Sexe was from Ullensvang parish in Hordaland, Norway. He was the son of Aamund Sjursen Sexe (1769–1864) and Brita Torsteinsdatter Mæland. He grew up on a farm with pietist parents who were members of the Haugean movement. He attended Bergen Cathedral School and took the examen artium in 1834. Sexe studied rock science at the University of Christiania (now University of Oslo) and graduated with a cand.miner. degree in 1840. During the years 1843–1844 he received a state scholarship to complete study trips at mines in Sweden and Germany and at the University of Berlin. After graduating in 1840, he became an aspirant at the Kongsberg Silver Mines and in 1841 assistant mining master in the Nordenfjells mountain district. Sjur Brækhus
Sjur Brækhus (19 June 1918 – 19 May 2009) was a Norwegian legal scholar and judge. He was born in Bergen as a son of captain and ship-owner Sigurd Alfred Brækhus (1879–1952) and Hilda Sverresdatter Klingenberg (1884–1957). He finished his secondary education at Frogner School in 1936 and graduated with the cand.jur. degree at the University of Oslo in 1941. He was a deputy judge in Eiker, Modum and Sigdal District Court from 1941 to 1942. He became a research fellow at the University of Oslo in 1945 and took the dr.juris degree in 1947 with the thesis ''Meglerens rettslige stilling''. He was married twice, the first time from 1945 to 1957. He was hired as a docent at the University of Oslo in 1947, and was promoted to professor already in 1948. Sjur Røthe (born 2 July 1988) is a Norwegian cross-country skier. He is a three-time World champion. Career He made his World Cup debut in March 2009 in Trondheim, but did not finish the race, and collected his first World Cup points in November 2009 in Beitostølen, with an eighteenth place. A fifteenth place in a 4 × 10 km relay race followed. He represents the sports club Voss IL, and lives in Oslo. He was diagnosed with Bekhterev's disease. Sjur Refsdal
Sjur Refsdal (30 December 1935 – 29 January 2009) was a Norwegian astrophysicist, born in Oslo. He is best known for his pioneer work on gravitational lensing, including the Chang-Refsdal lens. Biography In 1970 he earned a doctorate at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, University of Oslo. Later that year he became professor in astrophysics at the Hamburg Observatory in Germany, and remained in that position until he retired in 2001. In 1964 and 1966 he published a series of articles on the effects and possible applications of gravitational lenses. He is particularly known for the "Refsdal Method", which describes how one may estimate the expansion rate of the Universe (Hubble constant) using the measured time-delay and lens properties of a gravitationally lensed Supernova (SN). Sjur Lindebrække (6 April 1909 – 1 October 1998) was a Norwegian banker and Conservative Party of Norway politician. He was born in Voss. During the 1940 Norwegian Campaign, Lindebrække was mobilized by the Norwegian 4th Division. From 1940 he worked as assistant manager in Bergens Privatbank, and became bank manager in 1945, administrative director in 1959, and from 1969 he was working chairman. Sjur Loen (born 19 May 1958, in Oppdal) is a Norwegian curler and world champion. He participated on the winning team in the demonstration event at the 1988 Winter Olympics. International championships Loen is two times world champion, and has received four bronze medals at the world championships. Sjur Helge Torgersen (12 March 1946 – 7 September 2005) was a Norwegian diplomat and ambassador. He was a cand.jur. (jurist) by education. After first serving as local magistrate in Mandal, Norway he joined the Norwegian Foreign Service in 1979, after establishing Norway's consular visa office in Islamabad, Pakistan on behalf of the Norwegian Ministry of Justice in 1977. Before completing his admission to the diplomatic ranks he worked for Norwegian Refugee Council providing emergency aid for arriving Afghan refugees in Pakistan after the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. His first posting for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from 1981 to 1984, was as Secretary of Embassy at the Norwegian embassy in Jakarta.
