Sidney F. Barrett
Sidney F. Barrett (1892–1958) of New York City, was a prominent stamp dealer who participated in various important philatelic ventures in New York City itself. Philatelic literature Because of his philatelic knowledge, he edited Scott's Specialized Catalogue of United States Stamps for a number of years. Philatelic activity Barrett served philately in a number of ways: as president of the American Stamp Dealers Association, director of the Association for Stamp Exhibitions, secretary-treasurer of the 1913 International Philatelic Exhibition, and as a member of the Board of Governors of the Collectors Club of New York. Honors and awards Barrett was named to the American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame in 1958. American Stamp Dealers Association
The American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) is an international philatelic organization of stamp dealers. History ASDA was founded in 1914 as an association “dedicated to promoting integrity, honesty and reliability, and we are the hobby builders of philately.” The ASDA is structured similarly to other philatelic organizations, with a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, board of directors, general counsel, and various committees and regional chapters. The Collectors Club, often referred to as the Collectors Club of New York, is a private club and philatelic society in New York City. Founded in 1896, it is one of the oldest existing philatelic societies in the United States. Philately
Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting or the study of postage; it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare or reside only in museums. Etymology The word "philately" is the English transliteration of the French "", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864. Scott Catalog
The Scott catalogue of postage stamps, published by Scott Publishing Company, now a subsidiary of Amos Media, is updated annually and lists all the stamps of the world that its editors recognize as issued for postal purposes. It is published in fourteen large volumes (as of 2021) that include twelve volumes containing all the countries of the world that have ever issued postage stamps, the ''United States Specialized Catalog'', and the ''1840–1940 Classic Specialized Catalogue'' (covering the world for the first 100 years that stamps were issued). It is also produced in non-printable CD and DVD editions. The numbering system used by Scott to identify stamps is dominant among stamp collectors in the United States, Canada and Mexico. American Philatelic Society
The American Philatelic Society (APS) is the largest nonprofit stamp collecting foundation of philately in the world. Both the membership and interests of the society are worldwide. History The organization, originally named the ''American Philatelic Association'', was established on September 14, 1886 in New York City, and the following day elected John K. Tiffany as its first president. Voting membership was granted to 219 individuals who paid two bits (25¢) for the privilege. The organization's name was changed to its present name for a few months in 1897, then back, then permanently in 1908. Society membership reached over 4,000 in 1940, and included U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes.
