Sibley-Ocheyedan Community School District
Sibley-Ocheyedan Community School District (SOCSD) is a rural public school district headquartered in Sibley, Iowa. The district, entirely in Osceola County, serves Sibley and Ocheyedan. The district formed on July 1, 1985, as a merger of the Sibley and Ocheyedan school districts. Schools All schools are in Sibley. * Sibley-Ocheyedan High School (grades 7–12) - it had about 40 employees and 350 students. * Sibley-Ocheyedan Middle School (grades 5–8) * Sibley-Ocheyedan Elementary School (K-4) It previously operated two separate elementary schools: Ben Franklin Elementary School and Ocheyedan Elementary School. Sibley, Iowa
Sibley is a city in Osceola County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,860 at the time of the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Osceola County. Hawkeye Point, the highest point in the State of Iowa, is also nearby. History Sibley had its start in the year 1872 by the construction of the Sioux City & St. Paul Railroad through that territory. It is the oldest town in Osceola County. Sibley is named after Henry Hastings Sibley, a prominent general during the Dakota War of 1862, who eventually became the first governor of Minnesota. William L. Harding, governor of Iowa from 1917 to 1921, was born in Sibley in 1877. In March 2018, the city of Sibley lost a lawsuit brought against it by the ACLU. Osceola County ( ) is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census the population was 6,192, making it the state's fifth-least populous county. It is named for Seminole war chief Osceola. The county seat is Sibley, named for H. H. Sibley of Minnesota. History Osceola County was formed in 1871. It was named after the eponymous chief of the Seminole. It is the smallest and most recent county in Iowa. In the same year the first settler arrived, Captain Eldred Huff, and laid his claim. On January 1, 1872, the county government conferred for the first time. Siouxland Conference
The Siouxland Conference is a ten team high school athletic conference in the northwest corner of Iowa, consisting of schools ranging from the smallest class (1A) to the third largest class (3A), and known for its prominence in small school basketball. History Ocheyedan had its start in the year 1884 by the building of the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern Railroad through that territory.
