Shire Of Karkarooc
The Shire of Karkarooc was a local government area in northwestern Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1896 until 1995. History Land in Karkarooc was originally within the St Arnaud Road District, from 1861 and the Shire of St Arnaud, from 1864, and then within the Shire of Borung, after its severance from St Arnaud. Parts of the North and West Ridings of Borung severed on 29 May 1896, to form the Shire of Karkarooc. On 29 May 1897, it annexed the northeastern part of Shire of Dimboola, and two days later annexed part of Castle Donnington. On 31 May 1906, it also annexed part of the Tyrrell Riding of the Shire of Wycheproof. A new shire, Walpeup, was formed in western Victoria on 1 October 1911, taking in some areas of Karkarooc and sections of five other shires. Mallee (Victoria)
The Mallee covers the most northwesterly part of Victoria, bounded by the South Australian and New South Wales borders. Definitions of the south-eastern boundary vary, however, all are based on the historic Victorian distribution of mallee eucalypts. These trees dominate the surviving vegetation through most of Mallee, (except for swamps and areas along waterways, and very rare stands of ''casuarina''). Woomelang, Victoria
Woomelang is a town in the Mallee region of Victoria, Australia. The town is in the Shire of Yarriambiack local government area and on the Sunraysia Highway, north-west of the state capital, Melbourne, south-east of Mildura and north of Horsham. At the , Woomelang and the surrounding area had a population of 191. As with most towns in the Mallee region, the main industry is dryland agriculture and woolgrowing. The population has been slowly declining, from 290 at the 1981 census to 211 people in 2001, 195 in 2006, and 191 in 2011. Woomelang Post Office opened on 10 August 1900. Woomelang Magistrates' Court closed on 1 May 1981, having not been visited by a Magistrate since 1971. Turriff, Victoria
Turriff is a rural locality in Victoria, Australia, south of the urban centre of Mildura in Yarriambiack Shire. The town borders the Wathe Flora and Fauna Reserve, a breeding ground for Mallee fowl. Turriff was settled in 1902. The town itself includes a small colonial history museum. In 2006 the population of Turriff was 140. Turriff State School (No. 3537) opened in 1908, and was initially taught in alternating weeks with the Turriff East school. It was replaced with a new building about 1918. The school has since closed, and the building has since been moved to a different site within the township as part of the history museum. Turriff West State School (No. 3946) opened in 1923, but later closed with the school building being relocated to the town of Ouyen in 1976. Speed, Victoria
Speed is a locality in Victoria, Australia, located approximately 143 km from Mildura, Victoria and about 410 km from Melbourne. Speed was named after William, Harold and Gordon Speed, who settled in the district in 1903. Settlement by the Speed brothers coincided with the opening of the railway line and the opening up of the Mallee lands for farm selection. The Speed township was surveyed in 1910. The population at the was 78. Speed is the venue of the Mallee Machinery Field Days, first held in 1979. It is run over two days in August and has over 8,000 people attend. It is run by the Lions Club of Speed which has about 25 members. The event relies on volunteers from the district and has raised a great deal of money to go towards many different local, state and national charities and organisations. The Shire of Yarriambiack is a local government area of Victoria, Australia, located in the north-western part of the state. It covers an area of and, in June 2018, had a population of 6,658, having fallen from 7,438 in 2008. It includes the towns of Hopetoun, Murtoa, Rupanyup and Warracknabeal. It was formed in 1995 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Warracknabeal, Shire of Karkarooc, and parts of the Shire of Dunmunkle and Shire of Wimmera. The Shire of Wimmera was a local government area in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, Australia. The municipality covered an area of , and existed from 1862 until 1995. Although its shire offices were located in Horsham, Horsham itself was governed by a separate council after it succeeded in 1882. History The Wimmera road district was incorporated on 3 March 1862, and this district became a shire on 4 March 1864.
