The Shire of Wimmera was a local government area in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, Australia. The municipality covered an area of , and existed from 1862 until 1995. Although its shire offices were located in Horsham, Horsham itself was governed by a separate council after it succeeded in 1882. History The Wimmera road district was incorporated on 3 March 1862, and this district became a shire on 4 March 1864. It was originally a very large district, including a significant portion of Walpeup, plus Arapiles, Dimboola, Dunmunkle, Kaniva, Kowree and Lowan, centred on the town of Horsham. By 1900, all of these areas had severed and separately incorporated, and Wimmera's boundaries remained largely unchanged for over 90 years. Wimmera
The Wimmera is a region of the Australian state of Victoria. The district is located within parts of the Loddon Mallee and the Grampians regions; and covers the dryland farming area south of the range of Mallee scrub, east of the South Australia border and north of the Great Dividing Range. It can also be defined as the land within the social catchment of Horsham, its main settlement. Most of the Wimmera is very flat, with only the Grampians and Mount Arapiles rising above vast plains and the low plateaux that form the Great Divide in this part of Victoria. The Grampians are very rugged and tilted, with many sheer sandstone cliffs on their eastern sides, but gentle slopes on the west. In the context of the Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia, the Wimmera is a sub-region of located within the Murray Darling Depression bioregion. The Shire of Kowree was a local government area in western Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1862 until 1995. History Kowree was first incorporated as a road district on 24 June 1862, and became a shire on 26 January 1872. Kalkee is a locality in the Wimmera region of Victoria, Australia. Kalkee is located on the Blue Ribbon Road, north west of the state capital, Melbourne and north of the regional centre of Horsham. Jung is a locality in the northern Wimmera region, north-west Victoria. It is 316 km north-west of Melbourne and 18 km north-east of Horsham. The name is derived from the Parish ''Jung Jung'', which comes from an Aboriginal expression of uncertain meaning. It was previously known as Taylor’s Creek, Green Hills and Jerro. Dooen, Victoria
Dooen is a small town situated in the Wimmera region, Western Victoria, Australia. The Henty Highway between Mildura and Portland passes through the tiny town. At the 2021 census, Dooen had a population of 250. Dooen Post Office opened on 1 September 1877 and closed in 1982. The Old Dooen pub is one of the few remaining occupied buildings and is popular amongst the agricultural students of Longerenong College. The Dooen School closed in 1994, the Dooen Hall is all that remains on the site. Communications The ABC Western Victoria transmitter at Dooen, named 594 3WV, was built in 1936. The mast is 201 metres tall and the transmitter generates 50 kilowatts of power, with only 13 other more powerful broadcast towers in Australia.
