The Shire of Alexandra was a local government area located about northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1868 until 1994. Hume (region)
The Hume is an economic rural region located in the north-eastern part of Victoria, Australia. Buxton, Victoria
Buxton is a town north-east of Melbourne in the Australian state of Victoria. At the 2016 census, Buxton had a population of 233. The district around Buxton was significantly impacted by the Black Saturday bushfires. It was isolated for several days with no telephone or power. Today Buxton remains a small township with a roadhouse, a post office, general store, a fishing and outdoors store, Salmon and Trout Farm, hotel, a town hall, a primary school, nursery and several bed and breakfasts. Facilities Buxton has an active Country Fire Authority station with one medium and one light tanker. The Buxton Fire Brigade was formed in 1943 and officially recognised on 25 February 1944. Thornton is a town in nestling on the banks of the Goulburn River in the state of Victoria, Australia. It is in the Shire of Murrindindi local government area. The town is approximately halfway between Alexandra and Eildon. The town had a population of 299 at the 2016 census. History The locality was named after a nearby pastoral run called ''Thornton Run'' that was established in 1840. Taggerty, Victoria
Taggerty is a town in central Victoria, Australia, Victoria, Australia. It is located at the intersection of Maroondah Highway and Thornton Road. The Acheron River (Victoria), Acheron River also crosses the highway at Taggerty. At the , Taggerty and the surrounding area had a population of 328. A pastoral run called Taggerty Run was established in 1846. The homestead of the run was called Taggerty House. Gold was discovered along the Acheron River in 1870, which led to the establishment of two settlements, named Acheron Lower (now known as Acheron, Victoria, Acheron) and Acheron Upper (now known as Taggerty). The Post Office opened on April 15, 1876 and was renamed Taggerty in 1893. Acheron Upper Primary School opened in 1875. Rubicon, Victoria
Rubicon is a locality in Victoria, Australia, located in the Shire of Murrindindi. It is situated on the Rubicon River. In the 2021 census, Rubicon had a population of 44. Much of the locality consists today of forested protected areas, variously including the Yarra Ranges National Park, Rubicon State Forest, Rubicon Valley Historic and Cultural Features Reserve, Marysville State Forest, Mount Bullfight Nature Conservation Reserve and Cathedral Range State Park. It was once home to a significant timber industry, which was connected to the railhead at Alexandra by a network of tramways. History The first European settlement at Narbethong was established in about 1865 by Frederick Fisher. Fisher built a 12-room hotel, the ''Black Spur Inn'', on the road which was being built to link Melbourne with the new goldfield at Woods Point, Victoria, Woods Point. Fisher came from the town of Narberth, Pembrokeshire, Narberth in Wales, so it is likely that the name Narbethong was based on that. Eildon is a town in central Victoria, Australia. It is located near Lake Eildon, on the Goulburn Valley Highway, in the Shire of Murrindindi local government area. At the 2016 census, Eildon had a population of 974. The Shire of Murrindindi is a local government area in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia, located in the north-east part of the state. It covers an area of and, in June 2018, had a population of 14,478. It includes the towns of Alexandra, Buxton, Eildon, Flowerdale, Kinglake, Marysville, Molesworth, Strath Creek, Taggerty, Yarck and Yea. The Shire of Eltham was a local government area about northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1856 until 1994. History Eltham was first incorporated as a road district on 26 September 1856, and became a shire on 6 April 1871. In 1878, it was altered and re-defined. In 1912, it lost some of its area to the Shire of Healesville. In August 1918, Eltham Shire Council discussed and 'generally expressed themselves as favourable to the proposal' to obtain a "piece of land on the summit of Garden Hill, Kangaroo Ground, and the formation of a memorial park in which a monument could be erected to represent the whole of the Shire."
