Thornton is a town in nestling on the banks of the Goulburn River in the state of Victoria, Australia. It is in the Shire of Murrindindi local government area. The town is approximately halfway between Alexandra and Eildon. The town had a population of 299 at the 2016 census. History The locality was named after a nearby pastoral run called ''Thornton Run'' that was established in 1840. Thornton Post Office opened on 22 August 1914 and is still open and running from the local pub. Services The township has a Hotel and a caravan park in the centre of town. Petrol is available for purchase at the service station. Sport The Thornton-Eildon District Football & Netball Club play their home games on the Thornton recreation reserve. The Division of Indi (pronounced ) is an Australian electoral division in the state of Victoria. The division is located in the north-east of the state, adjoining the border with New South Wales. The largest settlements in the division are the regional cities of Wodonga, Wangaratta, and Benalla. Alexandra is a town in north-east Victoria, Australia, 130 kilometres north-east of the State Capital, Melbourne. It is located at the junction of the Goulburn Valley Highway (B340) and Maroondah Highway (B360), in the Shire of Murrindindi local government area. At the , the town had a population of 2,695 and the broader area (Alexandra District) a population of 6420. Eildon is a town in central Victoria, Australia. It is located near Lake Eildon, on the Goulburn Valley Highway, in the Shire of Murrindindi local government area. At the 2016 census, Eildon had a population of 974. The Shire of Murrindindi is a local government area in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia, located in the north-east part of the state. It covers an area of and, in June 2018, had a population of 14,478. It includes the towns of Alexandra, Buxton, Eildon, Flowerdale, Kinglake, Marysville, Molesworth, Strath Creek, Taggerty, Yarck and Yea. The Thornton-Eildon District Football & Netball Club, nicknamed "The Shinboners" or "Boners" for short, is an Australian rules football team which competes in the Outer East Football Netball League. History Origins The Thornton Football Club, was founded in 1920 and competed in the Alexandra and Yea Football Association for 4 seasons. The club participated in that league until 1923 before closing the doors for four years. Thornton being a small town situated on the Goulburn River had a small population and often resulted in player shortages. In 1929 they reformed and competed in the new Upper Goulburn Junior FA winning the premiership in 1931 and 1932. The competition merged with the Mansfield Line Association to form the Mansfield/Alexandra FA in 1934.
