The Shire of Meekatharra is a Local government areas of Western Australia, local government area in the Mid West (Western Australia), Mid West region of Western Australia, about halfway between the town of Port Hedland, Western Australia, Port Hedland and the state capital, Perth, Western Australia. History The Meekatharra Road District was established on 31 October 1909 out of the abolished Peak Hill Road District and Nannine Road District. It lost much of its territory to a reconstituted Nannine Road District on 7 December 1913, but regained much of that when the Nannine district was abolished for a second and final time on 24 January 1930. Porlell, Western Australia
Porlell is a ghost town located in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It is found between the towns of Nannine and Gabanintha. The town is situated within the Murchison goldfields. Gold was discovered in the immediate area in the mid-1890s by Leslie Robert Menzies at a find known as ''The Star of the East''. The townsite was gazetted in 1899 after significant development had been established. Star of the East was not considered to be a suitable name so the town took the name of a nearby lake, Porlelle Lake, which had been named when the area was surveyed in 1886. The spelling was amended for unknown reasons and the meaning of the name is unknown. Nannine, Western Australia
Nannine is a ghost town in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It is located on the northern bank of Lake Anneen, approximately south-southwest of Meekatharra, and north-northeast of Perth. Nannine was a former gold mining town, the site of the first discovery on the Murchison Goldfield. John Connelly discovered gold at the site northeast of Annean Station in 1890, prompting a gold rush to the area. The Murchison Goldfield was proclaimed in September 1891 and the town gazetted in 1893. It was the first town in the region. By 1894 the town was large enough to be given its own electoral district. In 1896 construction began on a railway between Nannine and Cue, Western Australia, which was completed in 1903. The continuation of the line to Meekatharra was begun in 1909. Horseshoe is an abandoned town in Western Australia located in the Murchison goldfields within the Mid West region of Western Australia situated between Meekatharra and Newman. The town is adjacent to the Peak Hill goldfields. History Gold was discovered in the immediate area in 1897 and the government had an area thought to be suitable for a townsite surveyed in 1898. The area proved to not be satisfactory to the locals who wanted another area to be used. The new area was surveyed and the town was gazetted in 1901. The population of the town was 60 (60 males and no females) in 1898. The town was often known as Horseshoe Bend as a result of one of the original leases in the area was the shape of a horseshoe. Peak Hill, Western Australia
Peak Hill is the name of a goldfield, locality and the site of a gold mining ghost town in the Murchison Region of Western Australia. The gold mine covers 2,162 hectares and consists of four open-cut mines, titled Main, Jubilee, Fiveways and Harmony. In the adjacent region to the locality there are considerable non auriferous mineral deposits. Adjacent fields included the Horseshoe field. Early exploration at the site occurred in the 1890s, when gold was discovered by William John Wilson in 1892. The townsite was gazetted in 1897, and the field has had varied fortunes even in early years. Before 1913, the mine produced some 270,000 ounces of gold. Peak Hill was also included as a location in a regional newspaper network of more outlying mining communities in the 1920s and 1930s. Karalundi is a medium-sized Aboriginal community, located 60 km north of Meekatharra in the Mid West region of Western Australia, within the Shire of Meekatharra. Native title The community is located within the registered Wajarri Yamatji (WAD6033/98) native title claim area. Education Children of school age at Karalundi attend the Karalundi Aboriginal Education Community campus. It is a co-educational school catering for students K – 10.
