Shifty Disco
Shifty Disco was a British independent record label based in Oxford, England. The record label was started by local enthusiasts in January 1997 and their early releases were often featured by John Peel on his BBC Radio 1 show. Shifty Disco has released recordings by artists such as Beulah (band), Beulah, Mark Gardener, Unbelievable Truth, and Young Knives. One of Shifty Disco's early, defining initiatives was the Shifty Disco singles club which released a new single every month to subscribers. A compilation of all the Singles Club releases was released as a 5-CD set in 2002: ''0-60 In Five Years - The Complete Shifty Disco Singles Club Collection''. Mark Gardener
Mark Stephen Gardener (born 6 December 1969, in Oxford, England) is an English rock musician, and a singer and guitarist with the shoegazing band Ride. Ride Gardener formed Ride with Andy Bell (guitar), whom he met at Cheney School in Oxford, and Laurence Colbert (drummer) and Steve Queralt (bass guitarist), whom he met doing Foundation Studies in Art and Design at Banbury in 1988. While still at Banbury the band produced a tape demo including the tracks "Chelsea Girl" and "Drive Blind". In February 1989 "Ride" were asked to stand in for a cancelled student union gig at Oxford Polytechnic that brought them to the attention of Alan McGee. After supporting The Soup Dragons in 1989, McGee signed them to Creation Records. With Ride, Gardener released three EPs between January and September 1990, entitled ''Ride'', ''Play'' and ''Fall''. The Barfly
The Barfly was a chain of live music venues in the United Kingdom originally started by Nick Moore, Jeremy Ledlin and Be Rozzo on Valentine's Day 1997. Club nights and events tended to feature rock, alternative and independent music. The flagship venue was based in Camden Town, London, England. The premises are still used as a live music venue, which has a capacity of 200. Camden venue Prior to 2000, the flagship Camden venue had been known as The Monarch, a pub which had hosted live music gigs since the 1980s. During the 1990s it became a regular venue for Britpop bands. Young Knives
Young Knives are an English indie rock band from Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire. The name is based on a misunderstanding of "young knaves", which was found by the band when rummaging through a book. The band was originally named Simple Pastoral Existence, but this name only lasted until they split for a few years from 1997 to 1999, at which time they renamed themselves Ponyclub. The name "Ponyclub" was changed when they got their first record deal because there was already an artist in existence named "Pony Club". This is when the name "The Young Knives" was coined. They later dropped the definite article prefix prior to the release of their second full-length album, '' Superabundance''. They broke into the music industry in 2002 with the critical success of their debut mini-album '' The Young Knives... Unbelievable Truth
Unbelievable Truth were a British rock band, led by Andy Yorke, with Nigel Powell, Jason Moulster, and Jim Crosskey. Their sound has been described as "slow, melancholy, country-tinged ballads, wrapped in a soft blanket of acoustic guitars and minor chords". History The band was formed in 1993 in Oxford, England, and named after Hal Hartley's film, '' The Unbelievable Truth''. A crisis of confidence led to a split in 1995, during which time Yorke took to exile in Russia. Upon his return in 1996, the band released their first single, "Building" in February 1997 on Shifty Disco, a record label based in Oxford. Beulah (band)
Beulah was an American indie rock band from San Francisco, California, often associated with The Elephant 6 Recording Company. History Early years: 1996-1998 The band was formed by Miles Kurosky and Bill Swan in San Francisco in 1996, while the pair were working in the same office. They discovered that they shared similar musical tastes and, disregarding some mutual dislike, decided to form a band. This early incarnation of Beulah recorded a song every six weeks for 16 months on their four-track recorder. The band received attention from The Apples in Stereo frontman and Elephant 6 member Robert Schneider, who expressed interest on releasing what was to be its first single, ''A Small Cattle Drive in a Snow Storm'', on Elephant 6 Records.
