Sherman Heights
Sherman Heights is an urban neighborhood in central San Diego bordered by Golden Hill to the north, Grant Hill to the east, East Village to the west, and Logan Heights to the south. It is part of the Southeastern Planning Area. The Sherman Heights neighborhood has the following roadways as boundaries: Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway to the north, 25th Street to the east, Imperial Avenue to the south, and Interstate 5 to the west. History Sherman Heights takes its name from its original developer Matthew Sherman, who purchased the land just east of Downtown San Diego in 1867. The Villa Montezuma, a large Victorian home built for musician and spiritualist Jesse Shepard in 1887, has been operated as a house museum, and is owned by the city of San Diego. Matthew Sherman
Matthew Sherman (October 31, 1827 – July 5, 1898) was a land developer and American Republican politician from California. Born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 13 and served on the and the . During the Mexican–American War, his ship briefly visited Monterey, California. During the Civil War, he served as Captain of the California Volunteers. He was at San Diego during the war and liked the city so much that he came back permanently after the war. Sherman started out in San Diego as a Customs Collector. He married Augusta Jane Barrett on May 10, 1867. They had three children. Sherman was a developer in San Diego and created "Sherman's Addition," or " Sherman's Heights", located just east of downtown. Rafael Reyes (artist)
Rafael Reyes (born August 2, 1975), also credited as Leafar Seyer, is an American author, artist and musician credited with creating the cholo goth genre of music, which lyrically explores the realities of gang and street life. Reyes frequently mixes Western esotericism with Olmec beliefs. Biography Reyes joined the Sherman 27th Street Grant Hill Park gang when he was a teenager to save his father's life after a skirmish at a local market. Upon graduating high school, Reyes opened San Diego's first vegan/vegetarian Mexican restaurant, Pokéz, with his father. After running the restaurant for eighteen years, and after his father's death, he sold Pokéz to his younger brother. In 2011, he wrote and published ''Living Dangerously'', a ''roman à clef'' about his life as a gang member, and toured California to promote the book. Prayers is an American rock act founded in 2013 by Rafael Reyes. As the musical project Prayers, Reyes originally collaborated with former member, Tijuana-born synthesizer player, Dave Parley. Cholo (subculture)
A cholo or chola is a member of a Chicano and Latino subculture or lifestyle associated with a particular set of dress, behavior, and worldview which originated in Los Angeles. A veterano or veterana is an older member of the same subculture. Other terms referring to male members of the subculture may include vato and vato loco. ''Cholo'' was first reclaimed by Chicano youth in the 1960s and emerged as a popular identification in the late 1970s. The subculture has historical roots in the Pachuco subculture, but today is largely equated with anti-social behavior, criminal behavior and gang activity.
