Shergarh, Rajasthan
Shergarh is a village located in the Jodhpur District of Rajasthan state in western India. It is a panchayat village as well as being the tehsil headquarters for Shergarh tehsil. History Before Sher Shah Suri's conquest, the town was known as Kōśavardhana. Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism thrived co-existentially in the area, as is evident from the various inscriptions dating back to at least the 8th century A.D. Accordingly to one epigraph, there flourished a great religious establishment of the Jains side by side with a Buddhist monastery and a Shaivite shrine. The Afghan emperor Sher Shah Suri is accused by `Abd al-Qadir Bada'uni and other Muslim historians for destroying old cities and in return founding new ones on their ruins after his own name. The medieval town is now mostly abandoned and its fort ruined. Jodhpur District is a district in the State of Rajasthan in western India. The city of Jodhpur is the administrative headquarters of the district. As of the 2011 census, it is the second highest populated district of Rajasthan (out of 33), after Jaipur district. Jodhpur is the historic center of the Marwar region. The district contains Mandore, the ancient capital of the Pratihara Rajput kings (6th-13th centuries), and the Pratiharas' temple city of Osiyan. Jodhpur was founded in the 15th century by Rao Jodha, and served as the capital of the kingdom of Marwar under the Rathore dynasty until after Indian Independence in 1947. Sher Shah Suri
Sher Shah Suri ( ps, شیرشاه سوری) (1472, or 1486 – 22 May 1545), born Farīd Khān ( ps, فرید خان) , was the founder of the Sur Empire in India, with its capital in Sasaram in modern-day Bihar. He standardized the silver coin to the weight of 178 grams and named the currency as rupee based on the ancient Sanskrit term for silver. An ethnic Pashtun ruler, Sher Shah took control of the Mughal Empire in 1540 CE. After his accidental death in 1545 CE, his son Islam Shah became his successor. He first served as a private before rising to become a commander in the Mughal army under Babur and then the governor of Bihar. In 1537, when Babur's son Humayun was elsewhere on an expedition, Sher Shah overran the state of Bengal and established the Suri dynasty.
