Shane McGrath (footballer, Born 1919)
James Patrick "Shane" McGrath (6 June 1919 – 1 November 1974) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League during the 1940s. A fullback, McGrath was a member of Melbourne's 1941 premiership side before missing the following two seasons due to war service. He was a premiership player again in 1948 and captained the club during his last season, in 1950. The 1941 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Melbourne Football Club and Essendon Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 27 September 1941. It was the 43rd annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1940 VFL season. The match, attended by 79,687 spectators, was won by Melbourne by a margin of 29 points, marking that club's fifth premiership victory. The 1948 VFL Grand Final and Grand Final Replay were a pair of Australian rules football games contested between the Melbourne Football Club and Essendon Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in October 1948. They were the 50th and 51st Grand Finals of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1948 VFL season. The Grand Final match, attended by 86,198 spectators on 2 October 1948, ended in a draw, the first time that a VFL Grand Final resulted in a draw. The All-Australian team is an all-star team of Australian rules football in Australia, Australian rules footballers, selected by a panel at the end of each season. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground.
