The Melbourne Football Club, nicknamed the Demons, is a professional Australian rules football club that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's elite competition. It is based in Melbourne, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, and plays its home games at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Percy Wilson (footballer)
Percival Edward Wilson (31 March 1889 – 28 March 1941) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood and Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1900s. A rover, Wilson won two premierships with Collingwood. The latter, in 1917, was a captain. In 1921 he moved to the Demons where he became captain and coach of the club. John Beckwith (footballer)
John Beckwith (born 16 September 1932) is a former Australian rules football player and coach, for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Beckwith's father, Wally Beckwith, was a VFL player for Fitzroy and was also a VFL umpire. Beckwith won the 1949 Federal Football League's Under 18 best and fairest award with Black Rock. Beckwith made his debut in round one against Essendon at Windy Hill. Essendon had been premiers the previous year and as such it was the unfurling of the 1950 premiership flag. The players had to line up, and General Sir Dallas Brooks, the Governor of Victoria, came past. Beckwith was only 19 years of age, and meeting the governor as well as playing his first game of VFL football was a nerve-wracking experience, although he did end up kicking a goal. Noel McMahen
Noel John McMahen (30 October 1926 – 10 July 2022) was Australian rules football player and a coach in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He played in the Melbourne premiership teams in 1948, 1955 and 1956. He captained Melbourne in his last two years before taking on the captain-coach position of Rochester Football Club in the Bendigo Football League between 1957 and 1961, leading them to premierships in 1958 and 1959 and runners up in 1960 and 1961. Denis Cordner
George Denis Pruen Cordner (28 June 1924 – 17 October 1990) was an Australian rules footballer, industrial chemist and diplomat. Early years Cordner was the third of four sons to Edward "Ted" Cordner and Margaret Constance née Pruen. Like his father, Cordner and his brothers Ted (1919-1996), Don (1922-2009) and John (1929-2016) were also notable sportsmen. All of them represented Melbourne Grammar School, University Blacks and in Australian rules football. Shane McGrath (footballer, Born 1919)
James Patrick "Shane" McGrath (6 June 1919 – 1 November 1974) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League during the 1940s. A fullback, McGrath was a member of Melbourne's 1941 premiership side before missing the following two seasons due to war service. Don Cordner
Donald Pruen Cordner (21 January 1922 – 13 May 2009), M.B.B.S. was an Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne Football Club, Melbourne in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1940s. His brothers Denis Cordner, Denis, John Cordner (sportsman), John and Ted Cordner, Ted also played for the club. Playing career Cordner played for Melbourne University Football Club, Melbourne University prior to joining the VFL, studying medicine when not on the football field. A Ruckman (Australian rules football position), ruckman who was also used in defence, Cordner made his debut for Melbourne in the 1941 finals series, playing in their winning grand final in just his second appearance for the club. Norman Walter Smith (21 November 1915 – 29 July 1973) was an Australian rules football player and coach in the Victorian Football League (VFL). After more than 200 games as a player with and , Smith began a twenty-year coaching career, including a fifteen-year stint at Melbourne. A Legend in the Australian Football Hall of Fame, Smith is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential coaches in the game's history, as well as being one of the finest full-forwards of his era. Percy Beames
Percy James Beames (27 July 1911 – 28 March 2004) was an Australian sportsman who played Australian rules football for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) as well as first-class cricket for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield. He later became one of Melbourne's most distinguished sports journalists, covering cricket and Australian rules football for ''The Age'' until 1976. Allan La Fontaine
Allan Faulkner La Fontaine (5 December 1910 – 14 August 1999) was an Australian rules footballer who played with and coached Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Private life La Fontaine was born at the country town of Eskdale, Victoria. While still a youngster his parents, Cyrelle and Beatrice, brought the family to Melbourne where they settled in the suburb of Footscray. He had three brothers, Claude, Lionel and Donald. Colin Niven
Colin Niven (6 September 1903 – 1 December 1968) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy and Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Colin Niven (1870-1938), and Ida Bell Niven (1875-1947), née Lewis, Colin Leslie Niven was born at Bealiba, Victoria on 6 September 1903. His cousin once removed, Gordon Jones, also played for Melbourne. He married Ada Dorothy Smith in 1934. Footballer Niven, a follower, played in the Ballarat Football League prior to joining Fitzroy. He captain-coached Fitzroy in 1930 and 1931 before crossing to Melbourne, which he captained in 1934 and 1935.
