Serbian Ombudsman
The Serbian Ombudsman (''Заштитник грађана / Zaštitnik građana'' in Serbian, literally meaning "Protector of Citizens") is an independent institution of the Government of Serbia, responsible for investigating and addressing complaints made by citizens against other government institutions. The Serbian Ombudsman was established in 2006 after the ratification of the country's current constitution. The first ombudsman was Saša Janković, elected on 14 June 2007 and re-elected on 4 August 2012. The ombudsman is appointed for a five-year term by the National Assembly, to which it reports every year or at their request. The ombudsman is not allowed to hold any other public or professional function. An ombudsman (, also ,), ombud, ombuds, ombudswoman, ombudsperson or public advocate is an official who is usually appointed by the government or by parliament (usually with a significant degree of independence) to investigate complaints and attempt to resolve them, usually through recommendations (binding or not) or mediation. Serbian Language
Serbian (, ) is the standardized variety of the Serbo-Croatian language mainly used by Serbs. It is the official and national language of Serbia, one of the three official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina and co-official in Montenegro and Kosovo. It is a recognized minority language in Croatia, North Macedonia, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. The current Constitution of the Republic of Serbia ( sr, / ), also known as Mitrovdan Constitution ( sr, / ) was adopted in 2006, replacing the previous constitution dating from 1990. The adoption of new constitution became necessary in 2006 when Serbia became independent after Montenegro's secession and the dissolution of Serbia and Montenegro. The proposed text of the constitution was adopted by the National Assembly on 30 September 2006 and put on referendum which was held on 28–29 October 2006. Saša Janković
Saša Janković ( sr-cyr, Саша Јанковић, ; born 27 April 1970) is a Serbian lawyer, journalist, human rights activist and politician who served as the National Ombudsman of the Republic of Serbia between 2007 and 2017. He resigned his post in February 2017 in order to run at the 2017 Serbian presidential election, where he came second with 16.36% of the vote. He was one of the founders and leader of Movement of Free Citizens, a centre-left political organization in Serbia before leaving it in January 2019.
