Sepia is a reddish-brown color, named after the rich brown pigment derived from the ink sac of the common cuttlefish '' Sepia''. The word ''sepia'' is the Latinized form of the Greek σηπία, ''sēpía'', cuttlefish. In the visual arts Sepia ink was commonly used for writing in Greco-Roman civilization. It remained in common use as an artist's drawing material until the 19th century. Grisaille is a painting technique developed in the 14th century in which a painting is rendered solely in tones of gray, sepia, or dark green. In photography, toning is a method of altering the color of black-and-white photographs. In analog photography, it is a chemical process carried out on metal salt-based prints, such as silver prints, iron-based prints (cyanotype or Van Dyke brown), or platinum or palladium prints. This darkroom process cannot be performed with a color photograph. The effects of this process can be emulated with software in digital photography. Sepia is considered a form of black-and-white or monochrome photography. Chemical toning Most toners work by replacing the metallic silver in the emulsion with a silver compound, such as silver sulfide (Ag2S) in the case of sepia toning. Coco Mbassi
Coco Mbassi (born 28 February 1969) is a musical artist originating from Cameroon, born in Paris, France, and based in London, UK. Winner of the Radio France Internationale Découvertes Prize in 1996 with the song "Muenge Mwa Ndolo", she toured worldwide and her first album, ''Sepia'', was released in 2001. This album was nominated in 2002 for the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards, and won the German World Music CD Critics' Awards. Her second album ''Sisea'' was released in 2003. After touring, she released a live tour DVD, ''Coco Mbassi Tour''. Prior to her solo career, she sang with various artists as a backing vocalist, live or in recording sessions (including with Salif Keita, the jazz band Sixun, Toure Kunda, Ray Lema)., and Manu Dibango. Yu Takahashi
is a Japanese singer-songwriter. He debuted on a major label in 2010, with his singles "Subarashiki Nichijō" and "Honto no Kimochi". Biography Takahashi grew up in Yokote, Akita, in the Tōhoku region of Japan. He started to learn the electric guitar in his final year of middle school, and in high school became the vocalist of a hardcore copy band for two years, performing such songs as Hide with Spread Beaver's "Pink Spider". During high school, he bought a cheap acoustic guitar, and began writing songs. His band broke up as the members went their separate ways, and Takahashi moved to Sapporo to attend a university. He performed in a band in Sapporo as well, however, due to the band dissolution (one member's love life took priority) Takahashi decided to become a solo musician. Background and composition The subject of the lyric was the 1994 Pulitzer Prize-winning professional photographer Kevin Carter who was awarded for his image '' The Vulture and the Little Girl'', taken in what is now South Sudan. Carter was troubled by the balance of his professional responsibilities with moral considerations, leading to his suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning at the age of 33. Their first lineup consisted of Akhdiyat Duta Modjo (also known as Duta, vocals), Saktia "Sakti" Ari Seno (guitar), Eross Candra (guitar), Adam Muhammad Subarkah ( bass) and Anton Widiastanto ( drums). Sepia is a mid-sized, upscale restaurant run by owner Emmanuel Nony and Executive Chef Andrew Zimmerman located in the West Loop neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois (United States). Chef Zimmerman's menu is classified as New American cuisine, and focuses on local, seasonal products. Built in Chicago's Warehouse District, Sepia was originally a print shop from the 1890s. The renovation for the restaurant, designed by Gary Lee, included putting in a custom-tile, Art Nouveau floor and hand-crafted millwork in order to enhance the historical qualities of the building. ''Sepia'' was a photojournalistic magazine featuring articles based primarily on achievements of African Americans. The magazine was founded in 1946 as ''Negro Achievements'' by Horace J. Blackwell, an African-American clothing merchant of Fort Worth, Texas. He had already founded ''The World's Messenger'' in 1942. George Levitan, a Jewish American and plumbing merchant in Fort Worth, bought Blackwell's magazines and Good Publishing Company (aka Sepia Publishing) in 1950. He changed the magazine's name gradually; in 1954 he named it ''Sepia,'' and published it until his death in 1976. He changed the name of ''Messenger'' to ''Bronze Thrills'' and had success with that for some time as well, also publishing black-audience magazines ''Hep'' and ''Jive''. After Levitan's death, ''Sepia'' was bought by Beatrice Pringle, who had been part of Blackwell's founding editorial team. She continued it until 1983, closing it despite respectable circulation.
