Semaphore Railway Line
Semaphore railway line was a railway line in the Australian state of South Australia located in the north-west of Adelaide servicing the suburbs of Semaphore and Exeter. It had two stations: Semaphore and Exeter. The line opened in 1878 and closed in 1978. History The Semaphore line was extended from Port Adelaide by South Australian Railways on 7 January 1878 with no intermediate stations. It was to serve both the new overseas shipping jetty at Semaphore, and for defence logistics along Military Road (in support of nearby Fort Largs and Fort Glanville). It remained the main line until the Outer Harbor railway line was extended north from a junction created at Glanville in 1908. In 1917 when the Semaphore to Rosewater and Albert Park tram line was opened there was an unresolved dispute over the tramline crossing the railway line near Exeter station. Glanville Railway Station
Glanville railway station is located on the Outer Harbor line. Situated in the north-western Adelaide suburb of Glanville, it is 13.8 kilometres from Adelaide station. History The station opened in 1878 after the extension of the Adelaide to Port Adelaide railway to Semaphore. This remained the main line, until the junction at Glanville towards Outer Harbor opened in 1908. The Semaphore branch line ran mainly in the middle of Semaphore Road and remained open until 1978. There was also a junction from Glanville with a track running east then north serving industrial sites along the Port River. The ''Birkenhead Loop'' was closed in 2008 when the Mary MacKillop rail bridge opened, and the alignment used to extend Semaphore Road to the Tom 'Diver' Derrick road bridge. Municipal Tramways Trust
The Municipal Tramways Trust (MTT) was established by the Government of South Australia in December 1906 to purchase all of the horse-drawn tramways in Adelaide, Australia. The Trust subsequently also ran petrol and diesel buses and electric trolleybuses. It ceased to exist on 8 December 1975, when its functions were transferred to the State Transport Authority, which also operated Adelaide's suburban train services. History The MTT was created in December 1906 as a tax exempt body with eight board members, mostly appointed by local councils and a small number of state government appointees. Largs Bay is a suburb in the Australian state of South Australia located on the Lefevre Peninsula in the west of Adelaide about northwest of the Adelaide city centre. Description Largs bay is bounded to the north by Walcot and Warwick Street, to the south by Wills, Hargrave and Union Streets and in the west and east by Gulf St Vincent and the centre of the Port River respectively. Albert Park, South Australia
Albert Park is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the City of Charles Sturt. History Named for Prince Albert, Albert Park was laid out in 1877 by a W.R. Cave. The suburb was advertised as: In 1920 a parcel of of land in Albert Park was bought by the aviator Harry Butler, who set it up the Hendon Aerodrome. Part of this site was subdivided in 1921 for residential development, and together with the aerodrome this land became the new suburb of Hendon. The aerodrome was compulsorily acquired by the Commonwealth in 1922 and operated until 1927, when aviation operations were transferred to Parafield. ''The Aerodrome'' Post Office opened on 19 August 1925. It was renamed ''Aero Park'' in 1945 and ''Albert Park'' in 1967, before closing in 1987. Rosewater, South Australia
Rosewater is one of the western suburbs of Adelaide and is located 10 km north-west of Adelaide's central business district. Although mainly residential, there are many shops along Grand Junction Road and the closed Rosewater Loop railway line runs through the suburb. Rosewater is split in half by Grand Junction Road and bordered on the east by Addison Road, and on the south by Torrens Road. Originally, the area was mainly used as vegetable and dairy farmland but became more and more residential as the railway lines and Grand Junction Road were completed and as Port Adelaide grew and developed.
