Glanville Railway Station
Glanville railway station is located on the Outer Harbor line. Situated in the north-western Adelaide suburb of Glanville, it is 13.8 kilometres from Adelaide station. History The station opened in 1878 after the extension of the Adelaide to Port Adelaide railway to Semaphore. This remained the main line, until the junction at Glanville towards Outer Harbor opened in 1908. The Semaphore branch line ran mainly in the middle of Semaphore Road and remained open until 1978. There was also a junction from Glanville with a track running east then north serving industrial sites along the Port River. The ''Birkenhead Loop'' was closed in 2008 when the Mary MacKillop rail bridge opened, and the alignment used to extend Semaphore Road to the Tom 'Diver' Derrick road bridge. Up until February 2013, a number of peak hour services from Adelaide terminated at Glanville using the bay platform, but they were withdrawn in favour of terminating services at Osborne. Glanville is a north western suburb of Adelaide, in the City of Port Adelaide Enfield. History In 1846 Captain John Hart settled near Port Adelaide on a private subdivision of section 908 of the Hundred of Port Adelaide. Hart's permanent residence was built on the subdivision in 1856. Hart named the residence Glanville Hall for his mother, Mary née Glanville, and the land division was known as Glanville Hall Estate. The suburb of Glanville was formally established on a portion of the Glanville Hall Estate subdivision in 1951 after the name was proposed in 1945. Tom 'Diver' Derrick Bridge
The Tom 'Diver' Derrick Bridge, commonly referred to as the 'Diver' Derrick Bridge, is an opening single-leaf bascule road bridge over the Port River, Port Adelaide, in South Australia. It opened on 1 August 2008. It is located between Docks 1 and 2 at Port Adelaide and links to Francis Street to the east and Victoria Road to the west. Adelaide Christmas Pageant
The National Pharmacies Christmas Pageant is a parade held annually in the South Australian capital of Adelaide. Established in 1933, the event is staged annually on the second Saturday of November, typically from 9.30am except 2020 and 2021 where it was broadcast at 7:00pm. It comprises a procession of 85 sets and 1,700 volunteers, including some 63 floats, 15 bands, 164 clowns, dancing groups, and walking performers, all culminating in the arrival of Father Christmas. The pageant is officially recognised as a "heritage icon" by the National Trust of Australia, and a "state institution" by the Government of South Australia. The pageant has been owned by the South Australian Government since 1996, and National Pharmacies has been the naming rights sponsor since 2019. Showdown (AFL)
The Showdown is an Australian rules football game played by the two Australian Football League (AFL) teams from South Australia, the Adelaide and Port Adelaide football clubs. The first AFL premiership fixture between the two clubs took place on 20 April 1997. The South Australian Brewing Company, makers of West End beers, were the first sponsors of the game and decided that the "Showdown" would be an appropriate name as a promotional opportunity for games between these two clubs, since it was the first time two South Australian teams had played against each other in the AFL. Mary MacKillop Bridge
The Mary MacKillop Bridge is a bascule bridge in Adelaide, Australia that carries the Dry Creek-Port Adelaide railway line over the Port River. In July 2005, Abigroup was awarded a contract to build a railway bridge and the adjoining Tom 'Diver' Derrick Bridge to carry the Port River Expressway over the Port River. The bridge was built as part of a project to divert the Dry Creek-Port Adelaide line away from the Rosewater loop and bypass the suburban network. It was opened on 1 August 2008 by Premier Mike Rann.
