''The Little Comrade'' ( et, Seltsimees laps) is a 2018 Estonian film directed by Moonika Siimets and based on the novels ''Seltsimees laps ja suured inimesed'' ('The Little Comrade') and ''Samet ja saepuru ehk Seltsimees laps ja kirjatähed'' ('Velvet and Sawdust') by Leelo Tungal. The film depicts the era of Stalinist tyranny in Estonia. The film's protagonist is six-year old girl Leelo whose mother (school director) is sent to a Siberian prison camp. Mother's last words are that if Leelo is a good girl, then mother will be soon back. Leelo is trying to do her best to fulfill mother's request. Moonika Siimets
Moonika Siimets (born 7 May 1980) is an Estonian film director who has directed award-winning documentaries, television series and short films. In 2010, she received the Cultural Endowment of Estonia for ''World Champion'' and ''Trendy Dog''. Her first feature film ''The Little Comrade'' (''Seltsimees laps'') remained the top film in Estonia for five weeks, attracting 100,000 viewers. Biography Born on 7 May 1980 in Tartu, Moonika Siimets matriculated from the Forselius High School in 1999 and went on to study Estonian literature and folklore at the University of Tartu. From 2002, she studied at the Department of Audiovisual Art at Tallinn University, majoring in directing in 2006. Maria Klenskaja
Maria Klenskaja (29 January 1951 – 6 January 2022) was an Estonian actress. Early life and career Klenskaja was born in Tartu, of Russian parentage. From 1968 until 1970, she worked in the Estonian State Youth Theatre in Tallinn as a make-up artist and in the prop department. In 1974 she graduated from the Tallinn State Conservatory's Performing Arts Department. Since 1974 she had been a contracted actress at the Estonian Drama Theatre. She was also engaged as an actress at the Vanalinnastuudio for one year, beginning in 1989. Besides theatre roles she had also had a successful film career and has appeared on television and in radio theatre. Personal life and death Klenskaja was in a relationship with actor Aarne Üksküla for over thirty years, until his death in 2017. Ene Järvis (born 26 October 1947) is an Estonian stage, film, radio, and television actress. Early life and education Ene Järvis was born in Kiidjärve, Põlva County to parents Paul and Amanda Elfriede Järvis. She was the second to youngest of five siblings; two older sisters and an older brother named Eimar almost fourteen years her senior, and a younger sister. Pille Pürg (born 9 March 1972 in Tartu) is an Estonian actress, comedian and parodist. Pürg graduated from Tartu Secondary School No. 5 in 1990. In 2012, she graduated from the Helsinki Theatre Academy with a degree in television and comedy acting.
