Schwäbisch Gmünd Prize
The Schwäbisch Gmünd Prize for Young Scientists is an annual award given by the European Academy of Surface Technology (EAST) to an early career researcher active in Europe on the grounds of originality, creativity and excellence in surface technology. The prize aims to promote science, research and education in the field of surface technology as part of EAST efforts to promote friendship and integration within the European scientific and technological community. The award is named in honor of the town of Schwäbisch Gmünd and its long tradition of craftsmanship of precious metals. The town has also been the location of EAST headquarters since its foundation in 1989. The prize is presented in a public lecture during an event sponsored by or co-organised by EAST, such as electrochemistry, corrosion or surface finishing related conferences. Schwäbisch Gmünd
Schwäbisch Gmünd (, until 1934: Gmünd; Swabian: ''Gmẽẽd'' or ''Gmend'') is a city in the eastern part of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. With a population of around 60,000, the city is the second largest in the Ostalb district and the whole East Württemberg region after Aalen. The city is a ''Große Kreisstadt'' since 1956, i.e. a chief city under district administration; it was the administrative capital of its own rural district until the local government reorganisation on 1 January 1973. Corrosion
Corrosion is a natural process that converts a refined metal into a more chemically stable oxide. It is the gradual deterioration of materials (usually a metal) by chemical or electrochemical reaction with their environment. Corrosion engineering is the field dedicated to controlling and preventing corrosion. In the most common use of the word, this means electrochemical oxidation of metal in reaction with an oxidant such as oxygen, hydrogen or hydroxide. Rusting, the formation of iron oxides, is a well-known example of electrochemical corrosion. Electroplating
Electroplating, also known as electrochemical deposition or electrodeposition, is a process for producing a metal coating on a solid substrate through the reduction of cations of that metal by means of a direct electric current. The part to be coated acts as the cathode (negative electrode) of an electrolytic cell; the electrolyte is a solution of a salt of the metal to be coated; and the anode (positive electrode) is usually either a block of that metal, or of some inert conductive material.
