Schoolly D (album)
''Schoolly D'' is the self-titled debut album by rapper Schoolly D. The album was released on Schoolly D Records in 1985 and in 1990 on Jive Records, and was produced by Schoolly D and DJ Code Money. It features three singles: "Put Your Filas On", " P.S.K. What Does It Mean?" and "Gucci Time". The album cover featured drawings of a b-boy set against a yellow background. The speech bubbles used proxies for swear words, such as "sheet" and "flucking". The latter was sampled in E-40's song "Stilettos & Jeans" featuring Bobby V, taken from his 2010 album '' Revenue Retrievin': Night Shift''. The album is considered to be the predecessor of gangster rap and a major influence on the first albums of Ice-T and Public Enemy as well as an influence and sample source for Beastie Boys and countless others. Jesse Bonds Weaver Jr. (born June 22, 1962), better known by the stage name Schoolly D (sometimes spelled Schooly D), is an American rapper from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Career Schoolly D teamed up with DJ Code Money in the mid-1980s. His lyrics reflected urban realism, violence, and sexual bravado. He was interviewed in the 1986 documentary '' Big Fun in the Big Town''. He later embraced an Afrocentric style, bringing Afrocentric culture to hip hop along with KRS-One. Schoolly D contributed songs and music to many Abel Ferrara films, including "P.S.K." and "Saturday Night" (from '' Saturday Night! – The Album'') as well as "King of New York" to Ferrara's film of the same name and the title track from '' Am I Black Enough For You?'' that was played during the climactic shoot-out in that film, the title track from '' How a Black Man Feels'', and "Signifying Rapper" (from '' Smoke Some Kill''), which was used in Ferrara's film ''Bad Lieutenant''. Beastie Boys
Beastie Boys were an American rap rock group from New York City, formed in 1978. The group was composed of Michael "Mike D" Diamond (vocals, drums), Adam "MCA" Yauch (vocals, bass), and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz (vocals, guitar, programming). Beastie Boys were formed out of members of experimental hardcore punk band the Young Aborigines in 1978, with Diamond as vocalist, Jeremy Shatan on bass guitar, John Berry on guitar, and Kate Schellenbach on drums. When Shatan left in 1981, Yauch replaced him on bass and the band changed their name to Beastie Boys. Berry left shortly thereafter and was replaced by Horovitz. After achieving local success with the 1983 comedy hip hop single " Cooky Puss", Beastie Boys made a full transition to hip hop, and Schellenbach left. Killing Joke
Killing Joke are an English rock band from Notting Hill, London, England, formed in 1979 by Jaz Coleman (vocals, keyboards), Paul Ferguson (drums), Geordie Walker (guitar) and Youth (bass). Their first album, '' Killing Joke'', was released in 1980. After the release of '' Revelations'' in 1982, bassist Youth was replaced by Paul Raven. Swans (band)
Swans is an American experimental rock band formed in 1982 by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira. One of the few acts to emerge from the New York City-based no wave scene and stay intact into the next decade, Swans have become recognized for an ever-changing sound, exploring genres such as noise rock, post-punk, industrial and post-rock. Initially, their music was known for its sonic brutality and misanthropic lyrics. Following the addition of singer, songwriter and keyboardist Jarboe in 1986, Swans began to incorporate melody and intricacy into their music. Jarboe remained the band's only constant member except Gira and semi-constant guitarist Norman Westberg until their dissolution in 1997.
