School For Poetic Computation
The School for Poetic Computation (SFPC) is a hybrid of a school, residency and research group that was founded in 2013 in New York. A small group of students and faculty work closely to explore the intersections of code, art, hardware and theory—focusing especially on artistic intervention, including code poetry. Rather than formal classes, the students at the school focus on creative projects. The school's motto is "more poems, less demos." The school was co-founded by Zachary Lieberman, Taeyoon Choi, Amit Pitaru, and Jen Lowe. Code
In communications and information processing, code is a system of rules to convert information—such as a letter, word, sound, image, or gesture—into another form, sometimes shortened or secret, for communication through a communication channel or storage in a storage medium. Code Poetry
Code poetry is literature that intermixes notions of classical poetry and computer code. Unlike digital poetry, which prominently uses physical computers, code poems may or may not run through executable binaries. A code poem may be interactive or static, digital or analog. Code poems can be performed by computers or humans through spoken word and written text. Examples of code poetry include: poems written in a programming language, but human readable as poetry; computer code expressed poetically, that is, playful with sound, terseness, or beauty. Zachary Lieberman
Zachary Lieberman is an American new media artist, designer, computer programmer, and educator. Early life and education Born in 1977, Lieberman holds a B.A. in Fine Arts from Hunter College and both a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Design and Technology from Parsons School of Design. Work Lieberman's work has appeared in numerous exhibitions around the world, including Ars Electronica, Futuresonic, CeBIT, and the Off Festival. He collaborated with artist Golan Levin on the interactive audiovisual project "Messa Di Voce". With Theo Watson and Arturo Castro, he created openFrameworks, an open source C++ library for creative coding and graphics. Jen Lowe
Jen Lowe is an American data scientist and professor at New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP). Lowe has also researched at Columbia University's Spatial Information Design Laboratory, as well as co-founding the School for Poetic Computation in New York. She is a member of the collective Deep Lab. Lowe's work is primarily focused on human interactions with data technology, most notably her One Human Heartbeat project that visualizes Lowe's own heartbeat. Lowe currently lives in New York. New Media Art
