Schlanders
Schlanders (; it, Silandro ) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in South Tyrol in northern Italy, located about west of the city of Bolzano. Overview Schlanders borders the following municipalities: Latsch, Laas, Mals, Martell, Schnals. Schlanders is well known because of its church tower, high, which is also the highest in South Tyrol. Another attraction is the renovated castle, which now serves as a civic hall (including a public library). The locality was mentioned for the first time officially on 13 June 1077 in a deed of donation, where the Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV. handed over the town to Altwin, the Bishop of Brixen. Society Linguistic distribution According to the 2011 census, 94.66% of the population speak German, 5.19% Italian and 0.14% Ladin as first language. René Gusperti
René ("Spillo") Gusperti (born 18 March 1971) is an Italian former swimmer. He was a world class freestyle sprinter during the 1990s and unchallenged Italian Champion in the same years. Biography Gusperti was born in Schlanders/Silandro. He began swimming in ''Rari Nantes Trento'', there he met his long-lasting coach Walter Bolognani, current head-coach of the Italian Junior National Team. He later joined ''Fiamme Gialle'' (the Athletic Team of Guardia di Finanza) and won his first Italian Championship in 1991, from then on ten years of nearly uninterrupted victories follows. During the nineties Gusperti competed in all the major international events, including 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. In 2005 he joined ''CSI Trento Nuoto'' where he still swim -as of 2007- and coaches. He is the brother of André Gusperti, another renowned former Italian swimmer. Thomas Moriggl
Thomas Moriggl (born 23 February 1981 in Schlanders) is an Italian cross-country skier who has competed since 2000. At the 2010 Winter Olympics, he finished 24th in both the 15 km and 30 km mixed pursuit events. Moriggl also finished 36th in the 50 km event at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 in Oberstdorf. His best World Cup finish was third on two occasions (2004: 30 km, 2005: 15 km). Mals (; it, Malles Venosta ) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in South Tyrol in northern Italy, located about northwest of Bolzano, on the border with Switzerland and Austria. Thomas Tragust
Thomas Tragust is a goaltender for Italy at the 2006 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships and the Texas Tornado of the NAHL. He participated at three IIHF World Championships as a member of the Italian National men's ice hockey team. Career Before North America Tragust began to play ice hockey in Latsch, Italy, until he was eleven years old. Afterwards, he played for Meran. In 2003, he debuted in the A1 series, the premier ice hockey league in Italy, where in his first game he recorded a 6-0 shutout. He led the team to two national championships. In 2005, he played for Italy at the IIHF World U-20 Hockey Championship in Division I. He missed out on selection for the 2006 Winter Olympics held in Turin, but in the 2006 IIHF World Championship, Tragust was on the roster and got his break in the final game, when they were risking demotion to Group B. Martell (; it, Martello ) is a valley and ''comune'' (municipality) in South Tyrol in northern Italy. It is located in the Martell Valley of the long river Plima, about west of Bolzano. The commune reaches from an elevation of up to the of the Zufallspitze (Italian: Monte Cevedale) which towers over the southeastern end of the valley.
