Saverdun (; Languedocien: ''Savardun'') is a commune in the Ariège department in southwestern France. Population Inhabitants of Saverdun are called ''Saverdunois'' in French. Name Saverdun gave its name to the former city of Verdun, Quebec, Canada, now a borough of Montreal, which was founded in 1671 by Zacharie Dupuy, a native of Saverdun. Verdun (; , ) is a borough (''arrondissement'') of the city of Montreal, Quebec, located in the southwestern part of the island. Long known as a working class neighbourhood, it has experienced significant gentrification and social change in the 21st century. Etymology The borough's name is a shortening of Saverdun, in France, the hometown of its early settler Zacharie Dupuy. It is not derived from the Battle of Verdun in World War I, predating the battle by centuries. Zacharie Dupuy
Zacharie Dupuy (1608 or 1610 – 1676) was a soldier and seigneur in New France. He served as acting governor of Montreal in 1662, from 1665 to 1666 and from 1667 to 1668. He was sometimes called sieur de Verdun. His surname sometimes appears as Dupuis. Biography He was born at Saverdun in the modern département of Ariège in the former County of Foix, France. Dupuy served as commandant at Quebec City and then set out on an expedition to establish a Jesuit mission among the Onondagas. He returned to Montreal in 1658 as assistant town-major. In 1662, he became town-major for Montreal. In 1671, he was granted the fief of Verdun and, in 1672, the Île aux Hérons and other islands. Dupuy was married twice: first to Jeanne Fauvenel, who probably died before he came to New France, and then to Jeanne Groisard in 1668. He died in Montreal and was buried July 1, 1676. Raymond VII Of Toulouse
Raymond VII (July 1197 – 27 September 1249) was Count of Toulouse, Duke of Narbonne and Marquis of Provence from 1222 until his death. Family and marriages Raymond was born at the Château de Beaucaire, the son of Raymond VI of Toulouse and Joan of England. Through his mother, he was a grandson of Henry II of England and a nephew of kings Richard I and John of England. In March 1211, Raymond VII married Sancha of Aragon. They had one daughter, Joan, and were divorced in 1241. He was engaged to Sanchia of Provence, but she married Richard of Cornwall instead. In 1243 Raymond married Margaret of Lusignan, the daughter of Hugh X of Lusignan and Isabella of Angoulême. They had no children and the Council of Lyons in 1245 granted Raymond a divorce. Hugh Of La Tour-du-Pin
Hugh of La Tour-du-Pin (1197/1198 – December 1249) was the bishop of Clermont from 1227 until his death. Hugh was a son of Albert, lord of La Tour-du-Pin, and Marie d'Auvergne. He is called '' magister'', showing that he had a formal education. Before his election as bishop, he was the prior of the Cluniac abbey of Sauxillanges, where many members of his family had served as prior. By 1227, he was also the provost of Clermont and a subdeacon. That year, he was elected to succeeded his uncle, Robert of Auvergne, as bishop of Clermont after the latter was transferred to the archdiocese of Lyon. Since he was at the time only twenty-nine years old, Pope Gregory IX appointed him diocesan administrator on 30 April 1227. He was confirmed as bishop after he turned thirty.
