Santiago Feliú
Santiago Vicente Feliú Sierra (March 29, 1962 – February 12, 2014) was a Cuban singer and songwriter. Born in Havana, he became part of the musical movement known as nueva trova, which was the Cuban manifestation of the nueva canción movement and included such singers as Frank Delgado and Carlos Varela. Feliú wrote the songs "For Barbara" and "Without Julieta" and recorded 11 albums. His last album, ''Oh Life'', came out in 2010. On 12 February 2014, he felt severe pain in his chest and died of a heart attack before he could reach the hospital in Havana. He was 51 years old. Nueva Trova
Nueva Trova (, "new trova") is a movement in Cuban music that emerged around 1967/68 after the Cuban Revolution of 1959, and the consequent political and social changes. Nueva Trova has its roots in the traditional trova, but differs from it because its content is, in the widest sense, political. It combines traditional folk music idioms with 'progressive' and often politicized lyrics. It is related to nueva canción in Latin America, especially Chile and Argentina. Some of the Nueva Trova musicians were also influenced by rock and pop of that time. Nueva Trova is defined by its connection with the Cuban revolution, and by its lyrics, which tried to escape the banalities of life by concentrating on socialism, injustice, sexism, colonialism, racism and similar 'serious' issues. Nueva canción (European , ; 'new song') is a left-wing social movement and musical genre in Latin America and the Iberian peninsula, characterized by folk-inspired styles and socially committed lyrics. ''Nueva canción'' is widely recognized to have played a profound role in the pro-democracy social upheavals in Portugal, Spain and Latin America during the 1970s and 1980s, and was popular amongst socialist organizations in the region. Frank Delgado (Cuban Songwriter)
Frank Delgado (born October 19, 1960 in Consolación del Sur, Pinar del Río) is a Cuban musician, and a member of the novísima trova, heir to the nueva trova movement. Biography He was born October 19, 1960 in Consolación del Sur part in the university cultural movements, and won some awards in different festivals. He is a hydraulic engineer by the Instituto Superior Politécnico José Antonio Echeverría. His first songs (''Orden del Día'' and ''Río Quibú''), were performed and brought to fame by other groups, but later on he sang his own songs. He has sung in more than 120 cities, in over a dozen countries, and his music has been used as soundtrack for radio, television and cinema. His songs are remarkable because of their lyrics, and speak about love, social affairs and deeply ironic criticism of current Cuban politics and society. Carlos Varela (singer-songwriter)
Carlos Victoriano Varela Cerezo (born 11 April 1963) is a Cuban singer-songwriter of Nueva Trova, a political and poetic musical genre. Nueva Trova began as a reaction to the unjust conditions that led to the Cuban Revolution in 1959. Varela joined the Nueva Trova musical movement in the 1980s while in his 20s. He has earned the nickname ("cariño" in Spanish) of "Nomo" (Gnome), due to the way he dresses. Career Silvio Rodríguez, one of the most well-known founders of Nueva Trova, discovered Varela and took him on tour in Spain. His first CD, "Jalisco Park", was published there in 1989. Today Varela's music is known for its open criticism of the status quo in post-revolutionary Cuba, but is still considered part of the Nueva Trova movement and genre.
