Santa Cruz is a Region and Town in central Aruba, dominated by the Arikok National Park. The town is connected by Highway 7 from west to east and Highway 4 from north to south. The district has an area of 41.04 square kilometers and 12,870 inhabitants according to the 2010 census. Santa Cruz is divided into several neighborhoods, including, but not limited to, Boton, Bringamosa, Cas Ariba, Jamanota, Jan Flemming, Macuarima, San Fuego, Shete, Siribana, Urataka, Warawara, and Catashi. Macuarima Macuarima is a town in the Santa Cruz region. The town has been named after Macuarima, an Amerindian chief who lived on Aruba. In 1499, the Spanish invaded the island, and Macuarima was killed trying to defend his homeland. Nowadays, Macuarima is best known as a play by Ernesto Rosenstand. The Atlantic Time Zone is a geographical region that keeps standard time—called Atlantic Standard Time (AST)—by subtracting four hours from Coordinated Universal Time ( UTC), resulting in UTC−04:00. Arikok National Park
The Arikok National Park takes up approximately 18 percent of the island of Aruba and includes three primary geological formations: the Aruba lava formation, a quartz diorite formation, and a limestone formation that extends inward from the coast. These formations have directly influenced Aruba's human settlement, as well as its natural wonders. Aruba is home to several species which only live on the island, including two unique species of snake and two bird species. Rock outcroppings also create micro-climatic conditions to support these unique plant and animal species, as well as settlements. These are located within the Arikok National Park almost exclusively. Gilberto François "Betico" Croes (; 25 January 1938 – 26 November 1986) was an Aruban political activist who was a proponent for Aruba's separation from the Netherlands Antilles. This eventually occurred in 1986, but following a car accident on 31 December 1985 (the night of ''status aparte''), Croes lapsed into a coma and never became conscious to see his accomplishment. Laura Simona Wernet-Paskel (February 18, 1911 – September 8, 1962) was an Aruban teacher, writer, and politician. She was the first female political candidate in Aruba, running for office three times beginning in 1949. Early life and education Laura Simona Paskel was born in Santa Cruz, Aruba, in 1911. She was the oldest of three children in a Catholic farming family. On the advice of the Dominican nuns who oversaw Catholic education in Aruba, she went by boat to the Netherlands at age 15 to study at a school in Reuver. When Paskel, along with Magdalena de Cuba, passed the teacher's exam in 1931, the two became the first Aruban schoolteachers to graduate in the Netherlands.
