Laura Wernet-Paskel
Laura Simona Wernet-Paskel (February 18, 1911 – September 8, 1962) was an Aruban teacher, writer, and politician. She was the first female political candidate in Aruba, running for office three times beginning in 1949. Early life and education Laura Simona Paskel was born in Santa Cruz, Aruba, in 1911. She was the oldest of three children in a Catholic farming family. On the advice of the Dominican nuns who oversaw Catholic education in Aruba, she went by boat to the Netherlands at age 15 to study at a school in Reuver. When Paskel, along with Magdalena de Cuba, passed the teacher's exam in 1931, the two became the first Aruban schoolteachers to graduate in the Netherlands. Career Teaching Back in Aruba, Paskel began teaching at the Maria School in Santa Cruz, where she was known as "Miss Laura." Lago Colony
Lago Colony was a community located on the east end of the island of Aruba, near the area presently known as Seroe Colorado. The town consisted of 377 homes, a hospital, church, club house, bowling alley, and an American School, with first through twelfth grades and approximately 180 students. The population of Lago Colony was primarily from the United States, although there was a large population from England, Ireland, and Scotland who were primarily officers on the lake tanker fleet. In addition there were Dutch, Danish, Spanish and other nationalities represented in the community. This town was supported by a large oil refinery in the world, which at that time was owned by a subsidiary of Standard Oil of New Jersey, known as Lago Oil and Transport Company. Maria Irausquin-Wajcberg
Maria Irausquin-Wajcberg (13 September 1897 – 15 April 1979) was an Aruban politician. In 1963 she became the first woman to be elected to Aruba Island Council. Biography Irausquin-Wajcberg was married twice. She had two children with her first husband, Isaac Pinkus, with whom she ran a shop called Pinkus Store in San Nicolaas from the 1930s. She later married Juancho Irausquin (1905–1962), a prominent Aruban politician. At the time of his death in 1962, he was Minister of Finance and Welfare of the Netherlands Antilles and leader of the Aruban Patriotic Party (PPA). In the 1963 Island Council elections, Irausquin-Wajcberg was the last-placed candidate on the PPA list, a slot usually reserved for prominent party members who do not expect to be elected. However, once preference votes were taken into account, she was elected to the Island Council, becoming its first female member. Campo Alegre, also known as Le Mirage, was a large open-air brothel in Curaçao. It has been operated since the 1940s.
