San Stanislao Kostka, Palermo
San Stanislao Kostka is a Roman Catholic parish church located on 24 Via del Noviziato in the city of Palermo, region of Sicily, Italy. History The church was erected in 1607 by the Jesuit order with designs by Natale Masuccio. It served as the church for an adjacent Jesuit seminary. However, after the expulsion of the Jesuits from the Kingdom of Naples in 1767, the seminary was used as barracks for the royal troops. In 1814, the church was restored to the Jesuit order. During the revolution of 1848, the adjacent former seminary was leveled by revolutionaries. The area is now replaced by modern government buildings. Above the portal is a bas-relief in a medallion sculpted by Giacomo Pennino depicting Stanislaus Kostka in adoration of the infant Jesus. On the second floor are two busts of Jesuit saints. Stanislaus Kostka
Stanisław Kostka S.J. (28 October 1550 – 15 August 1568) was a Polish novice of the Society of Jesus. He is venerated in the Catholic Church as Saint Stanislaus Kostka (as distinct from his namesake, the 11th-century Bishop of Kraków Stanislaus the Martyr). He was born at Rostkowo, Przasnysz County, Poland, on 28 October 1550, and died in Rome during the night of 14–15 August 1568. He entered the Society of Jesus in Rome on his 17th birthday (28 October 1567), and is said to have foretold his death a few days before it occurred. The Roman Rite ( la, Ritus Romanus) is the primary liturgical rite of the Latin Church, the largest of the ''sui iuris'' particular churches that comprise the Catholic Church. Natale Masuccio
Natale Masuccio (between 1561 and 1568 – August 1619), also known as Mesuccio or Tomasucci, was an Italian architect and Jesuit. He is regarded as one of the most important architects in Sicily during the transition between Mannerism and Baroque. Life and career Masuccio was born in Messina sometime between 1561 and 1568. There is no documentation about his early life and initial training as an architect. He entered the Jesuit Order in 1580 and was sent to Rome to study architecture in 1586 and again in 1597–99. He probably started his architectural studies in Messina, since at the time of his call at the headquarters of the order he already had a mature age. Masuccio was therefore able to launch his training in a vibrant cultural scene, and he may have been in contact with Andrea Calamech, who introduced Tuscan mannerism which would later influence the work of Masuccio. Giacomo Serpotta
Giacomo Serpotta (10 March 1656 – 27 February 1732) was an Italian sculptor, active in a Rococo style and mainly working in stucco. Biography Serpotta was born and died in Palermo; and may have never left Sicily. His skill and facility with stucco sculpture appears to have arisen without mentorship or direct exposures to the mainstream of Italian Baroque. Rudolf Wittkower describes him as an aberrancy in an otherwise provincial scene, a "meteor in the Sicilian sky". In 1677, along with Procopio de Ferrari, he decorated the small church of the Madonna dell’Itria in Monreale. His first independent work appears to be in 1682 in connection with an equestrian statue cast of Charles II of Spain and Sicily, which was cast in bronze by Gaspare Romano.
