San Juan Juquila Mixes
San Juan Juquila Mixes is a town and Municipalities of Oaxaca, municipality in Oaxaca in south-western Mexico. It is part of the Yautepec District in the east of the Sierra Sur de Oaxaca, Sierra Sur Region. The name "Juquila" means "beautiful vegetables". Geography The municipality covers an area of 227.1 km2 at an altitude of 1,420 meters above sea level. The terrain is rugged, with a cool climate. Native trees include pine, guanacastle and cedar. Mango, avocado, sapodilla, mamey, soursop, banana, guava, oranges, tangerines and other fruit trees are grown. Yautepec District is located in the east of the Sierra Sur Region of the State of Oaxaca, Mexico. Environment The district lies in the eastern end of the Sierra Madre del Sur and is mountainous, with an area of 4,772 square kilometers. Sierra Sur is a region in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. It includes the districts of Putla, Sola de Vega, Miahuatlán and Yautepec. Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz is the largest city. The region has 70 municipalities, some very poor, such as Zanizá, Amoltepec and Los Loxichas. Mixe People
The Mixe (Spanish ' or rarely ' ) are an indigenous people of Mexico inhabiting the eastern highlands of the state of Oaxaca. They speak the Mixe languages, which are classified in the Mixe–Zoque family, and are more culturally conservative than other indigenous groups of the region, maintaining their language to this day. A population figure of 90,000 speakers of Mixe were estimated by SIL international in 1993. The Mixe name for themselves is ''ayuujkjä'äy'' meaning "people who speak the mountain language" The word "Mixe" itself is probably derived from the Nahuatl word for cloud: ''mīxtli''.
