Samuel Yirga
Samuel Yirga is an Ethiopian musician and composer signed to Peter Gabriel's Real World Records. Overview At the age of 16, Samuel was accepted into Yared School of Music in Addis Ababa. He was later dismissed for his tendency to experiment and his insistence on playing traditional and contemporary Ethiopian music, instead of adhering to the classical curriculum. His music fuses traditional ''azmari'' music, Ethio-jazz, dub, reggae, jazz, Latin, and classical music. The title of his debut album, ''Guzo'', means "journey". Featured vocalists include the Creole Choir of Cuba, Iraqi-British singer Mel Gara, and Nigerian-British singer Nicolette. Dubulah (Nick Page) produced the album. Instrumentalists on the album hail from Ethiopia, Europe and the Caribbean. Samuel is also a member of Dub Colossus and Ethiopian funk band Nubian Arc. Piano
The piano is a stringed keyboard instrument in which the strings are struck by wooden hammers that are coated with a softer material (modern hammers are covered with dense wool felt; some early pianos used leather). Nicolette (musician)
Nicolette (full name Nicolette Love Suwoton, born 1964) is a Scottish singer-songwriter of Nigerian parentage, residing in London for most of her life, and has also lived in Nigeria, Switzerland, France, and Belgium. Her music, although falling broadly into the field of electronica, is characterised by many influences, including, jazz, classical, blues, folk and African. Career She has released three solo albums, as well as a DJ mix album for the '' DJ-Kicks'' series, and featured on "Three" and " Sly", two songs on Massive Attack's 1994 ''Protection'' album. ''The Rough Guide to the Music of Ethiopia'' is a world music compilation album originally released in 2012. Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series, the release contains two discs: an overview of the music of Ethiopia—focusing mainly on 21st century pop—is found on Disc One, while Disc Two features dub-style musician Invisible System. The compilation was curated by Dominic Raymond-Barker and Phil Stanton, co-founder of the World Music Network, who was also the producer. It is the second compilation by this name: the first volume, focusing on music of the 1960s, was released in 2004. Critical reception The compilation's release was met with positive reviews, with Robert Christgau including it in his top albums of 2012. The Creole Choir of Cuba is a Cuban musical group.
