Samikannu Vincent
Samikannu Vincent (18 April 1883 – 22 April 1942) was a cinema exhibitor turned theatre owner. His first theatre was Variety Hall (now Delite theatre) in Coimbatore in 1914. He was a pioneer in making movies, popular in Madras presidency and contributing to growth of it by buying new equipment from abroad, as well as establishing the concept of modern day theatres that exist today. Early days Samikannu Vincent was born on 18 April 1883. He was born in Coimbatore. He was working in South Indian Railway as a draftsman-clerk. He happened to see some short films exhibited by French film exhibitor named DuPont. Vincent befriended him and by the time when DuPont wanted to return home, Samikannu Vincent raised enough money with difficulty to buy the Frenchman's projector, accessories and films. Coimbatore, also spelt as Koyamputhur (), sometimes shortened as Kovai (), is one of the major metropolitan cities in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Documentary Film
A documentary film or documentary is a non-fictional motion-picture intended to "document reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education or maintaining a historical record". Bill Nichols has characterized the documentary in terms of "a filmmaking practice, a cinematic tradition, and mode of audience reception hat remainsa practice without clear boundaries". Cinema Theater Day
Cinema Theater day is celebrated on the birthday of Swamikannu Vincent, who built the first theater in South India. He built Variety Hall (now Delite Theatre) in Coimbatore in 1914. The day is set to commemorate the centenary year of Variety Hall. Origin G K Tirunavukarasu of 80-20 Pictures, initiated the idea of celebrating the birthday of Swamikannu Vincent. He wanted to bring the cinema theaters and film industry closer to each other. He felt it was critical as there were as much as 2500 theatres in Tamil Nadu once and now there are only 1200 theaters. With the enthusiastic research and work of people from both inside and outside the cine industry, the Cinema theater day is set to be celebrated on 18 April 2014. Central Studios was an Indian film studio in the neighbourhood of Singanallur, Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, started by B.Rangaswamy Naidu (a.k.a. B. R. St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli (SJC) is a Catholic college in Tamil Nadu, India.
