Sam Abbas
Sam Abbas (Arabic language, Arabic: سام عباس; born 11 November 1993) is an Egyptian people, Egyptian film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is noted for his artfully composed, poetic, and incident-like tableaus film style. Career Abbas' Alia's Birth, second feature, received attention following the announcement of a female-driven short film contest in which the winner gets to have their film included within the narrative. The film stars Nikohl Boosheri, Poorna Jagannathan, Samuel H. Levine and Maya Kazan. On July 13, 2020, Abbas released a 2.5 minute short documentary, Rusted Caravaggios, about the first public invitation to the Louvre Museum (Monday July 6, 2020) following an unprecedented four-month closure. Rusted Caravaggios
''Rusted Caravaggios'' is a 2020 French short documentary film about the first public invitation to the Louvre Museum (Monday July 6, 2020) following an unprecedented four-month closure amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Background On July 6, Paris' Louvre Museum reopened after being closed for several months amid the coronavirus pandemic. Art enthusiasts that traveled to the famous institution to view the well-known works were met with quite a different experience than they would have previously had before the spread of COVID-19 as they visited the gallery space. Only 7,000 people total with reserved tickets entered the space. The documentary was produced by Abbas, his duties included director, cinematographer and sound recorder in showing a near-empty museum, which included a tableau with a man sitting still next to Leonardo da Vinci's ''Mona Lisa''. The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored films released from January 1, 2020, to February 28, 2021, at Union Station in Los Angeles. ''Marie'' is a 2020 short documentary directed by Sam Abbas about labor during homebirths. The film was originally scheduled for an April 2020 theatrical window for Academy consideration; however it premiered exclusively on IGTV August 10, 2020 due to the COVID cancellation of all theaters in New York City. Based on the 93rd Academy Awards' new rules to offset the COVID interruptions Marie is eligible and running for a nomination. Plot An observation of labor during a home-birth. Subjects * Marie Brewer (Mother) * Daniel Bauer (Father) * Takiya S. Ballard (Midwife) Filming Abbas stated during a Columbia Global Centers panel that part of what he was going to be working on is a short documentary focusing only on labor during a homebirth making it very different from Alia's Birth where he shows the delivery of a baby during a home-birth.
