The E, E2 and E5 classes of the Swedish State Railways (SJ) were three closely related types of steam locomotives. The E class 0-8-0 locomotives were part of the development of modern superheated types that had begun with the A class in 1906, and were intended for both mixed traffic in Norrland and heavy freight trains in southern Sweden. Many of them were rebuilt to the 2-8-0 E2 class between 1935 and 1951, enabling a speed increase from to . Three E class locomotives built for private railways became known as the E5 class following nationalization, as they were slightly heavier than the ones built for SJ. The E class was ill-suited for hauling express trains, due to their low speed, but they were otherwise used for all types of traffic and in all parts of Sweden. Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, represents the wheel arrangement of no leading wheels, eight powered and coupled driving wheels on four axles and no trailing wheels. Locomotives of this type are also referred to as eight coupled. Overview Examples of the 0-8-0 wheel arrangement were constructed both as tender and tank locomotives. The earliest locomotives were built for mainline haulage, particularly for freight, but the configuration was later also often used for large switcher ( shunter) types. The wheel arrangement provided a powerful layout with all engine weight as adhesive weight, which maximised the tractive effort and factor of adhesion. The Swedish State Railways class E10 was a type of steam locomotive which was used for freight traffic. Ten locomotives were built in 1947 as a slightly modified version of the older E9 class. They were used mainly on the Inland Line, before being placed in the strategic reserve, where some remained until 1990; five of them have been preserved. The Coast-to-Coast Line ( sv, Kust till kust-banan) is a long Y-shaped electric railway line between Gothenburg via Emmaboda to Kalmar and Karlskrona in southern Sweden. History The line was built as five different railways: from Gothenburg to Borås, from Borås to Alvesta, from Växjö to Alvesta, from Karlskrona to Växjö and the Kalmar Line.
