Sølyst, Klampenborg
Sølyst is a former country house located just near the Øresund coast in Klampenborg, Gentofte Municipality, on the northern edge of Copenhagen, Denmark. It now houses the Royal Copenhagen Shooting Society. History First owners The first Sølyst, then spelled ''Zeelust'', was built by a merchant called Julius Frøichen. It was half-timbered and stood 11 bays long. In 1725, it was bought by another merchant, Just Fabritius, who also owned the nearby Rococo mansion Christiansholm, which he had built in 1746. He replaced the house with a new building in 1760. A cultural venue In 1776 the property was acquired by Ernst Heinrich von Schimmelmann, a central civil servant in the financial administration and later Minister of Financial Affairs, who used it as his summer residence. The year before he had married Countess Emilie Rantzau but she died of tuberculosis just five years later when only 28 years old. Klampenborg
Klampenborg is a northern suburb to Copenhagen, Denmark. It is located in Gentofte Municipality, directly on Øresund, between Taarbæk and Skovshoved. Like other neighbourhoods along the Øresund coast, Klampenborg is an affluent area with many large houses. Landmarks Klampenborg is known for a cluster of building projects by the Functionalist Danish architect Arne Jacobsen. These include Bellevue Beach, the Bellavista housing estate and the Bellevue Theatre, all completed between 1932–36 as some of the earliest Danish examples of Modernism. Klampenborg is the main gateway to the extensive Jægersborg Deer Park, one of the most popular green areas in greater Copenhagen, known for its large deer population, the Hermitage Royal Hunting Lodge and ancient oak trees. Charlotte Schimmelmann
Magdalene Charlotte Hedevig Schimmelmann (10 August 1757 – 2 December 1816) was a Danish noble woman and salonist. Biography Magdalene Charlotte Schubart was born at Fossum in Skien, Norway to Lieutenant Carl Rudolph Schubart (1714–59) and Inger Løvenskiold (1732–1808). On 25 May 1782, she married the statesman Count Ernst Heinrich von Schimmelmann (1747–1831). After the coup d'état against Ove Høegh-Guldberg in 1784, he became Minister of Finance until 1813 and later Prime Minister. Her salon was organized according to the French pattern and was renowned abroad. The latest developments in science, politics and culture were discussed. She considered it a profession to be a salonist. Her salon gathered philosophers and politicians, and played a part in the country's political scene. Ole Berendt Suhr (1813–1875)
Ole Berendt Suhr (3 May 1813 – 6 October 1875) was a Danish merchant, investor, landowner and philanthropist. Early life and education Ole Berendt Suhr was born in Nyborg, where his father by the same name was a merchant and his mother Laurine Marie Müller (1795–1876) was a daughter of the wealthy merchant Rasmus Møller. Suhr moved to Copenhagen where he studied theology at the University of Copenhagen from 1832 to 1838 while at the same time training as a merchant in the family's trading house J. P. Suhr & Søn, which was managed by his uncle Johannes Theodorus Suhr. He soon won his uncle's respect and it was therefore decided that he was later to take over the company. Theodor Suhr
Johannes Theodor(us) Suhr (2 April 1792 – 10 November 1858) was a Danish merchant and industrialist. He owned the Suhr House at Gammeltorv in Copenhagen as well as Sølyst north of the city and was the founder of the foundation Den Suhrske Stiftelse. Early life Suhr was born into a wealthy family of merchants in Copenhagen in 1792. His father was Ole Berendt Suhr, owner of J. P. Suhr & Søn, which had been founded by Johan Peter Suhr (1712–1785). The company traded in a wide range of products, including coal, salt, linum and hemp. It survived the difficult years during the war with England in the 1800s. Fortifications Of Copenhagen (17th Century)
The fortifications of Copenhagen underwent a comprehensive modernization and expansion in the 17th century. The project was commenced and was largely the masterplan of Christian IV in the early 17th century but was continued and completed by his successors. The new fortifications relied on the existing, medieval fortifications of the city but the fortified area was extended and a defensive ring around the city completed particularly with new edifices facing the sea. The ring fortification consisted of four bastioned ramparts and an annexed citadel as well as various outworks. Though largely developed to a final form in the 17th century, the fortifications remained in use until the second half of the 19th century, when they finally, a long time overdue, were decommissioned. Skydebanehaven
Skydebanehaven (English 'The Shooting Range Gardens') is a small public park in the heart of the Vesterbro district of Copenhagen, Denmark. Its name refers to the former shooting range of the Royal Copenhagen Shooting Society which used to be located on the site. The most distinctive feature of the park is the Neo-Gothic Shooting Range Wall which was constructed in 1887 to shield traffic on Istedgade from stray bullets. The other end of the park is bounded by the rear of the former headquarters of the Shooting Society, a Neoclassical mansion which has more recently housed the Museum of Copenhagen. Access to the park is either through a small gate in the Shooting Range Wall, through an unassuming gate next to Absalonsgade 14 (off Vesterbrogade), or a third gate at the northeastern and of Matthæusgade. The Museum of Copenhagen (Danish: Københavns Bymuseum) is the official museum of Copenhagen, Denmark, documenting the city's history from the 12th century to the present. History The Museum of Copenhagen was founded in 1901. Starting in 1925, the museum had a permanent exhibition in the attic of Copenhagen City Hall. Vesterport Station () is a S-train station in the centre of Copenhagen, Denmark. The station is located in the district of Indre By, and is named after the historic '' Vesterport'' city gate, although it is located quite a distance from the original location of the city gate.
