Funchal () is the largest city, the municipal seat and the capital of Portugal's Madeira, Autonomous Region of Madeira, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. Madeira Island
Madeira is a Portuguese island, and is the largest and most populous of the Madeira Archipelago. It has an area of , including Ilhéu de Agostinho, Ilhéu de São Lourenço, Ilhéu Mole (northwest). As of 2011, Madeira had a total population of 262,456. The island is the top of a massive submerged shield volcano that rises about from the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. Santo António (Portuguese meaning "Saint Anthony") is a civil parish in the northwestern part of the municipality of Funchal on the island of Madeira. It is located about 3 km northwest of central Funchal. The most populous civil parish in the archipelago, it extends into the mountainous interior of the island. The population in 2011 was 27,383, in an area of 22.16 km2. History The settlement that existed in this area was primarily small artisan shops, that congregated around a small chapel dedicated to Santo António, in the late 16th century, when it was elevated to ecclesiastical parish. São Roque (Funchal)
São Roque is a civil parish in the northern part of the municipality of Funchal, on the island of Madeira. The population in 2011 was 9,385, in an area of 7.50 km². History The lands associated with São Roque were once part of a much larger parish of Sé, but later, for a short period it was part of São Pedro. The eccliastical parish of São Roque was dismembered from São Pedro and neighbouring São Martinho by Cardinal Infante Henrique on 3 March 1579. The Cardinal authorised the prelate of Funchal to create a new parish within the dominion of Sé. This was instituted with its parish seat at the ancient chapel of São Roque, constructed by the residents at the beginning of the 16th century, probably from local funds collected by Funchal's citizens (Saint Roch was the patron saint of Funchal protecting them from the plague, during the early part of the 16th century). São Martinho ( en, Saint Martin) is a civil parish in the municipality of Funchal, on the island of Madeira. The population in 2011 was 26,482, in an area of 7.95 km². History During the island's early settlement, the area that includes the present parish was part of the much large Sé, and later São Pedro, when it was finally deannexed in 1597. The lands immediately around the commercial centre of Funchal were quickly acquired and put into service for cultivation of subsistence crops. As with the other settlements in the Portuguese Empire, these settlements eventually formed from communities of living in the shadow of small chapels that dotted the landscape.
