''Szamanka'' () is a 1996 erotic drama film directed by Andrzej Żuławski and adapted from a screenplay by Manuela Gretkowska. The film, which was controversial upon its release in Poland, follows the obsessive relationship between an anthropology professor and a strange young woman only known as the "Italian". The title is the feminine form of the word "shaman" in Polish. Plot In Warsaw, a student only known as "the Italian" (Polish: ''Włoszka''), played by :pl:Iwona Petry, is on the search for an apartment. The Italian, a beautiful and free spirit, is originally from the countryside. Andrzej Żuławski
Andrzej Żuławski (; 22 November 1940 – 17 February 2016) was a Polish film director and writer. Żuławski often went against mainstream commercialism in his films, and enjoyed success mostly with European art-house audiences. In the late 1950s, he studied cinema in France. His second feature, ''The Devil'' (1972), was banned in communist Poland, and Żuławski went to France. After the success of '' That Most Important Thing: Love'' in 1975, he returned to Poland where he spent two years making '' On the Silver Globe'' (not released until 1988). The work on this film was interrupted and destroyed by the authorities. After that, Żuławski moved to France where he became known for controversial and violent art-house films such as ''Possession'' (1981). Manuela Gretkowska
Manuela Gretkowska (6 October 1964) is a Polish writer, screenwriter, feminist and politician. She is the foundress of the Feminist Initiative. Biography Manuela Gretkowska was born in Łódź and studied philosophy at Jagiellonian University in Kraków. In 1988, she left Poland to live in Paris, where she studied anthropology at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales. In the early 1990s, she returned to her country, where she was deputy editor-in-chief and then literary director at ''Elle''. She wrote columns for ''Elle'', ''Cosmopolitan'', ''Wprost'', ''Polityka'', '' Machina'', and '' Cogito''. Bogusław Linda (; born 27 June 1952) is a Polish actor known from films such as ''Psy'' and ''Tato''. He appeared in Andrzej Wajda's ''Man of Iron'' and ''Danton'' and in Krzysztof Kieślowski's ''Blind Chance'' and the seventh episode of Kieślowski's ''Dekalog''. ''On the Silver Globe'' ( pl, Na srebrnym globie) is a 1988 Polish epic science fiction film directed and written by Andrzej Żuławski, adapted from ''The Lunar Trilogy'' by Jerzy Żuławski. Starring Andrzej Seweryn, Jerzy Trela, Iwona Bielska, Jan Frycz, Henryk Bista, Grażyna Deląg and Krystyna Janda, the plot follows a team of astronauts who land on an uninhabited planet and form a society. Many years later, a single astronaut is sent to the planet and becomes a messiah. Production took place from 1976 to 1977, but was interrupted by the decision of the Polish authorities. ''Possession'' is a 1981 psychological drama and horror film directed by Andrzej Żuławski and written by Żuławski and Frederic Tuten. The plot obliquely follows the relationship between an international spy (Sam Neill) and his wife (Isabelle Adjani), who begins exhibiting increasingly disturbing behavior after asking for a divorce. ''Possession'', an international co-production between France and West Germany, was filmed in West Berlin in 1980.
