Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese Of Mananthavady
The Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Mananthavady is an Eastern Catholic eparchy in India, under the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. It was established in 1973 by Pope Paul VI. It is a suffragan diocese of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archdiocese of Tellicherry, the bishop of the diocese is Jose Porunnedom. History The eparchy of Mananthavady was erected by Pope Paul VI, by the Bull Quanta Gloria of 1 March 1973 bifurcating the vast diocese of Tellicherry. The diocese of Tellicherry and Mananthavady were erected for the migrated peoples from the central Kerala. Population explosion and the shortage of food during the post-war period (1945-1960) induced them to migrate to the uninhabited fertile lands of northern Kerala and to some isolated pockets of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka States. These places were filled with thick forests and under the threat of malaria and other diseases. Mar Jose Porunnedom (born 13 March 1956) is a Syro-Malabar Catholic bishop who currently serves as the bishop of Manathavady Diocese. He is the third bishop of Manathavady Diocese. Early life and episcopal career Jose Porunnedom was born at Vettimattom of Idukki district on 13 March 1956. After completing his studies at St. Joseph's Minor Seminary, Tellicherry, St. Joseph's Pontifical Seminary, Aluva and at the Pontifical Urban University, Rome he was ordained a priest on 22 December 1982. In 1986, he went to Rome and obtained a Doctorate in Canon Law from Pontifical Oriental Institute. Mar George Njaralakatt ( syc, ܡܪܝ ܓܝܘܪܓܝܣ) (born 23 July 1946) is a Syro-Malabar Catholic Archbishop. He retired as the archbishop of Archdiocese of Tellicherry on 15 January 2022 at the age of 75. Early life Bishop Mar George Njaralakatt was born to Varkey (Late) and Mary (Late) Njaralakatt on 23 June 1946 at Kalayanthani in Thodupuzha Taluk in Idukki District. His LP School studies were at St. Josephs School, Arakuzha and he completed UP at St. Marys High School near Muvattupuzha.
